Meaning

Like a creeper with no pole to climb, I am tossed about, O gentle one! I am withering in the heat; do not forsake me, see! O you who dwell in the heights that even the gods cannot approach, O King of Uthirakosamangai that stands for ever! O you who became the sky, the earth, fire, wind and water!

Explanation

'A creeper with no pole' is a soul with nothing to hold. A creeper needs a pole to climb; without one it curls on the ground and withers. For the soul, that pole is the Lord. It recalls the Sangam story of King Pari, who gave his own chariot as a support for a jasmine creeper.

And that pole is not out of reach: he is the sky, earth, water, wind and fire, everywhere. Whichever way the creeper reaches, it can touch him.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
