Uthirakosamangai temple tradition; Thiruvasagam, Kuyil Pathu 2; Saiva oral traditionGrace for Mandodari in Lanka
Mandodari, the queen of Ravana, was a great devotee of Siva. Living in Lanka, she worshipped him every day, and her one longing was to see the Lord with her own eyes, even once. Tradition says that when her devotion ripened, the Lord appeared before her as a beautiful child.
Ravana was suspicious of the child at first, but Mandodari's heart knew at once: this is my Lord. Then the child's form fell away, and Siva showed his true form and blessed her. The temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai, where the Lord taught the meaning of the Vedas to Uma, cherishes the memory of this vision granted to Mandodari.
Manikkavasagar recalls this grace in the second verse of Kuyil Pathu, naming the Lord of Perunthurai as the one who gave the bliss of his great grace to lovely Mandodari of southern Lanka. She was the wife of the king of the rakshasas, yet true love brought the Lord down to her. Birth, place and circumstance are no barrier to grace: that is the message of the story.
