Explanation

The last verse of Vazhappathu ends with a vow: 'Would I worship others, praise them, think of them as my companion?' I will bow to, praise and lean on no one but the Lord. Appar sang with the same resolve: 'we are subject to no one, we do not fear Death.'

One phrase returns in all ten verses: 'I have no other support.' This is the hymn's means to liberation. When every attachment gathers into one attachment, that attachment itself becomes freedom. The longing that cannot live in the world is the doorway to a life lived with the Lord.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirunavukkarasar; Thevaram (Appar), the hymns 'Sotrunai vedhiyan' and 'Namarkkum kudiyallom'

Appar, Who Floated on the Stone

When Thirunavukkarasar, called Appar, returned from the Jain faith to Saivism, the Pallava king summoned him to court. Appar refused, singing 'we are subject to no one, we do not fear Death.' He would bow his head to no one but Siva.

The angry king shut him in a lime kiln for seven days; it was as cool as the shade of the Lord's feet. He gave him poisoned food; it turned to nectar. He set a maddened elephant on him; it walked around him and bowed. At last the king had him tied to a stone and thrown into the sea. Appar sang, 'the Lord of the Vedas, the radiant one... our true companion is Namasivaya.' The stone floated like a raft and carried him to the shore at Thiruppadhirippuliyur. Seeing this wonder, the king himself became a Saiva.

In Vazhappathu, Manikkavasagar says, 'I have no other support', and 'would I bow to others, praise them, think of them as my companion?' Appar's life was the test of that resolve. Thrown into the sea with no other help, his one companion was Namasivaya, and that companion made even a stone float.

To reflect on

If all your attachments gathered into one, what would it be turned towards?
