Meaning

You who share your body with the Lady whose speech is sweet as music! I have no support but you, know this. You ruled me, and surely. King of Sivapuram! Siva who dwells at Perunthurai! I have placed in you my thought, my body, my mouth, nose, ears and eyes, all of them; and having done so, I, your servant, cannot go on living on this earth, know this.

Explanation

Mind, body, mouth, nose, ears, eyes: all five senses and the mind have been handed over to the Lord. Having given everything, nothing is left to live in the world with. This is what the name Vazhappathu, 'ten verses of not living', means: all that worldly life needs has gone to the Lord.

In Adaikkalappathu the senses were mud and nets. Here those same senses have been placed in the Lord: the eyes to see him, the ears to hear his praise, the mouth to speak his name. The Saiva way is not to crush the senses but to turn them towards the Lord.

Appar, Who Floated on the Stone

When Thirunavukkarasar, called Appar, returned from the Jain faith to Saivism, the Pallava king summoned him to court. Appar refused, singing 'we are subject to no one, we do not fear Death.' He would bow his head to no one but Siva.

The angry king shut him in a lime kiln for seven days; it was as cool as the shade of the Lord's feet. He gave him poisoned food; it turned to nectar. He set a maddened elephant on him; it walked around him and bowed. At last the king had him tied to a stone and thrown into the sea. Appar sang, 'the Lord of the Vedas, the radiant one... our true companion is Namasivaya.' The stone floated like a raft and carried him to the shore at Thiruppadhirippuliyur. Seeing this wonder, the king himself became a Saiva.

In Vazhappathu, Manikkavasagar says, 'I have no other support', and 'would I bow to others, praise them, think of them as my companion?' Appar's life was the test of that resolve. Thrown into the sea with no other help, his one companion was Namasivaya, and that companion made even a stone float.
