Meaning

I have no support but your feet, which Vishnu sings and praises, know this. You came looking for me and ruled me. King of Sivapuram! Siva who dwells at Perunthurai! My sulking is with you, my delight is in you, and what I have to tell, I tell to you: this is the firm bond between you and me. I have withered. I cannot live here, know this. Grant me grace and say 'come'.

Explanation

'My sulking is with you, my delight is in you' comes from the Tamil tradition of love poetry. Udal is the playful anger between lovers. Only in true love is there such sulking; nobody sulks with a stranger. In the love section of the Thirukkural, Valluvar says that sulking is the sweetness of love.

Manikkavasagar has won the right to be cross with the Lord, to delight in him and to open his heart to him. This is 'the firm bond between you and me'. It is what Saiva Siddhanta calls the path of friendship: approaching the Lord with the familiarity of a friend or a lover.

Notice too 'you came looking for me and ruled me'. The devotee did not seek the Lord; the Lord came looking for him.

Appar, Who Floated on the Stone

When Thirunavukkarasar, called Appar, returned from the Jain faith to Saivism, the Pallava king summoned him to court. Appar refused, singing 'we are subject to no one, we do not fear Death.' He would bow his head to no one but Siva.

The angry king shut him in a lime kiln for seven days; it was as cool as the shade of the Lord's feet. He gave him poisoned food; it turned to nectar. He set a maddened elephant on him; it walked around him and bowed. At last the king had him tied to a stone and thrown into the sea. Appar sang, 'the Lord of the Vedas, the radiant one... our true companion is Namasivaya.' The stone floated like a raft and carried him to the shore at Thiruppadhirippuliyur. Seeing this wonder, the king himself became a Saiva.

In Vazhappathu, Manikkavasagar says, 'I have no other support', and 'would I bow to others, praise them, think of them as my companion?' Appar's life was the test of that resolve. Thrown into the sea with no other help, his one companion was Namasivaya, and that companion made even a stone float.
