Meaning

This body is a hollow wall of flesh under a false roof, rotting, full of worms and leaking. I took it to be real and was caught in the whirlpool of the sea of sorrow. And yet the Father, who is the full radiance of pearl, great gem, ruby, diamond and coral, ruled me and joined me with his devotees. What a wonder we have seen!

Explanation

Two houses face each other in this verse. One is the body: a hollow wall, a leaking roof, wood eaten by worms. The other is the Lord: the light of every jewel, pearl, gem, ruby, diamond and coral. Believing the crumbling house to be real is what trapped him in the sea of sorrow.

Saiva Siddhanta explains this as the nature of ignorance: taking what does not last for what lasts. The Thirukkural too calls it the lowest folly to think the impermanent permanent. The Lord, the light of all jewels, alone is lasting; once he is seen, the spell of the leaking house lifts.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar; her Arputha Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvalangadu hymns

Karaikkal Ammaiyar, Who Saw the Dance at Thiruvalangadu

Punithavathiyar of Karaikkal loved the devotees of Siva deeply. One day her husband sent home two mangoes, and she gave one to a hungry devotee of Siva who came to the door. When her husband came to eat and asked for the second mango, she prayed to the Lord, and a mango appeared in her hand. Struck by its wondrous taste, her husband asked its secret, and she told him what had happened. At his request she prayed for another, and that too came. Frightened by the wonder, her husband came to regard her as divine and left her.

Punithavathiyar prayed to the Lord, 'I do not want this beautiful body. Give me the form of a ghoul.' She became a figure of bones and went to Kailasa walking on her head. The Lord called her 'Mother'. She asked to watch his dance forever from beneath his feet, and tradition says she still watches and sings the dance at Thiruvalangadu. Her poem is called the Arputha Thiruvandhadhi, the hymn of wonder.

In Athisayappathu, Manikkavasagar sings of the Lord 'who danced at night holding fire' in the cremation ground, and accepts that the world calls him mad. Karaikkal Ammaiyar too took a form the world feared in order to see that dance. Those the world looked on with wonder and fear, the Lord called 'Mother' and kept close to himself. That is the wonder.
