Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaSita Found at the Tip of Janaka's Plough
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Janaka, king of Mithila, was foremost among the wise, yet he did not think working with the soil beneath him. To prepare the ground for a sacrifice, he took the plough and tilled the field himself.
Where the tip of the plough, the sita, touched the earth, a beautiful baby girl rose from the soil. Janaka accepted her as his daughter and named her Sita, for she was found at the tip of the plough. As the earth's daughter she is also honoured as Bhumija.
Sita Devi, honoured by the whole world, rose from a field that a king had ploughed with his own hands. It is a beautiful proof that tilling the soil and growing crops is the way to receive the earth's grace.
