Mahabharata, Adi ParvaThe Poisoned Sweets Given to Bhima
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. In his youth Bhima was famous both for his strength and for his love of food. Envious of his strength, Duryodhana arranged a festival of water sports at Pramanakoti on the bank of the Ganga.
There, pretending affection, he fed Bhima delicious sweets mixed with poison. Charmed by their taste, Bhima ate his fill. When he fell senseless from the poison, Duryodhana bound him with creepers and pushed him into the river.
Bhima sank all the way to the realm of the Nagas. There the serpents' bites countered the poison, and the Naga king gave him nectar that granted him great strength. Though grace saved him, the episode teaches us not to be charmed by taste into eating whatever anyone gives.
