Aathichoodi 65 · தோற்பன தொடரேல்

Thoarpana thotarael

Meaning

Do not take up what is bound to fail.

Word by word

things bound to fail
do not pursue

Explanation

Do not take up what is bound to fail. If we press on down a wrong road out of pride or stubbornness, the loss only grows.

Zeal and stubbornness are different. Pressing on for a good purpose is zeal (line 6); pressing on towards ruin for an unjust purpose is folly.

Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda

Maricha's Warning

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda. To carry off Sita, Ravana sought Maricha's help. Maricha was the one who, long before, had come to spoil Vishvamitra's sacrifice and was hurled across the sea by a single arrow from the young Rama.

He pleaded with Ravana: "Rama is dharma in human form. To clash with him is to fall into fire. Since that day, whenever I see a tree I see Rama with his bow. This venture can end only in defeat and ruin; it will destroy Lanka itself."

Ravana would not listen and threatened to kill him if he refused. Maricha went as the golden deer and fell to Rama's arrow. Just as he had said, Ravana, who pursued what was bound to fail, perished along with his clan.

Is there a pursuit that it would truly be wiser to let go of?
