Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara KandaHanuman Weighs His Words in the Ashoka Grove
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda. Having crossed the sea, Hanuman found Sita in the Ashoka grove, surrounded by rakshasis. His heart longed to go straight to her and speak.
But sitting in the tree, Hanuman weighed it up: "If a monkey suddenly appears before her, she may be frightened and think it is Ravana's trickery. If I speak Sanskrit like a brahmin, she may think Ravana has come in disguise. If she cries out, the guards will wake."
Having thought it through, Hanuman began, from up in the tree, to tell Rama's story softly in plain human speech. Sita looked up with hope. That carefully weighed action won her trust.
