Mahabharata, Vana ParvaSavitri and Yama
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. Savitri, daughter of King Ashvapati, chose as her husband Satyavan, who lived in the forest. Though Narada warned, "He will die within a year," her heart did not change.
Throughout that year she did not sink into grief; she lovingly served her husband and his blind parents. On the appointed day Satyavan fell in the forest, and Yama came to take his life.
Savitri did not collapse in tears. She followed Yama and spoke wisely about dharma. Pleased by her words, Yama granted her boons, and at last gave back Satyavan's life. A mind that gave no room to sorrow overcame even death.
