Explanation

The traditional reading of this line is "do not act on a woman's word without thought". Its inner lesson is not contempt for women, but that one must not act on anyone's word, out of desire or attachment, without examining it.

Avvaiyar herself was a woman, and it is she who gave us this book. So the fitting understanding is: weigh every piece of counsel against dharma before accepting it.

Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

Dasharatha's Two Boons

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Long before, Kaikeyi had saved Dasharatha's life in a battle, and he had granted her two boons in return. Her mind turned by Manthara's words, Kaikeyi asked for those boons on the night before Rama's coronation: the kingdom for Bharata, and fourteen years of forest exile for Rama.

Without first asking what she wanted, and lost in his affection, Dasharatha had already sworn by Rama's name, "I will give whatever you ask." When he learned the truth, he was torn apart, unable to break his word.

Kaikeyi accepted Manthara's word without examining it; Dasharatha accepted Kaikeyi's word without examining it. Those two unexamined acceptances together sent Rama to the forest and Dasharatha to his death.
