Explanation

Valluvar names here two pillars for raising a family: exertion and understanding. Exertion is acting with energy. Understanding is the clarity of what is right to do and what is not. One alone will not suffice. If the wise do not act, their wisdom is of no use. If the active lack understanding, their labour may be wasted and stray off course. Only when the two join does a family stand tall for a long time.

The word 'neelvinai', long-working, is crucial. Raising a family is not a task that ends in a day or a year; it stretches beyond generations. Small efforts must continue. Each generation plays its part and prepares the way for the next. For this long work, exertion is the fuel and understanding the guide.

That exertion and understanding complete each other is a thought Valluvar voices elsewhere too. He says that those with knowledge possess everything, yet he also faults those without exertion. Here he joins the two as the basic qualifications for a family. If a family today wants to put its finances in order, hard work alone does not suffice; it also needs the judgment of where to invest and what to avoid. To educate children, money alone is not enough; clarity about what is to be taught is needed too. A family with both will endure and grow.

A story

Arjuna and His Charioteer

This scene is from the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, at the start of the Bhagavad Gita. The two armies stood arrayed at Kurukshetra. Arjuna asked Krishna to station his chariot between them. On seeing his grandfather, teachers and kinsmen opposite, the bow slipped from his hand.

"Krishna, my hands tremble and my mouth is dry. I do not want a kingdom won by killing my kin," Arjuna lamented. He had been ready to labour; but at that moment his understanding faltered. The action was there, but not the clarity.

Krishna taught him the Gita. He explained duty, the nature of action and work done without attachment to its fruit. Arjuna listened. In the end he said: "My delusion is gone; I shall do as you say."

Afterwards Arjuna took up his bow. Krishna as charioteer gave clarity and guidance, and Arjuna loosed the arrows with his own hands. Because understanding and exertion joined, the Pandava line won back its right.

At the close of the Gita Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra: "Where Krishna, lord of yoga, and Arjuna, the archer, are, there I think are fortune, victory and lasting justice." Here Krishna is the figure of wisdom and Arjuna the figure of exertion.

This one scene beautifully shows the union Valluvar describes as 'aalvinaiyum aandra arivum'. Effort without wisdom is Arjuna's faltering; wisdom without effort is mere talk. Only when the two joined did the house endure.
