Explanation

In this verse the hero's mind stands in a strange paradox. When rumour rises in the village he should be alarmed; but he says that it is only then that his life holds firm. The reason is that on days when he cannot see his beloved his life rests on her memory alone, and even a word the villagers say about her brings her name to his ear. That becomes like a life-giving medicine to him. The word aaruyir shows how precious and how much in need of protection his life is.

The second half is subtler: "many do not know it." The villagers who gossip know only half; they do not know the full truth of his heart. He calls that ignorance his good fortune. Otherwise they might have blocked this love. So the village talk gives him pleasure on one side and their ignorance gives him protection on the other. This double state is the charm of the verse.

An example for today: that others are talking about us can sometimes be a sign we have not been forgotten. But Valluvar does not ask us to trust that talk wholly; he points only to the comfort hidden in it. The lesson is that we too should sort truth from falsehood in what is said about us and keep our composure.

A story

News at the Temple Car Festival

When the Azhi Ther festival at Thiruvarur comes, the whole town is lively. The gigantic chariot, pulled by thousands holding the ropes, moves slowly. That year the student Arun had come to the festival from his village. In his heart was the thought of a girl named Sivakami. He had seen her in the temple only twice, and yet he could not forget her.

While he was in the crowd pulling the car, Arun overheard two women talking. "That Arun, Vadivazhagan's son, they say he goes about singing, looking at Sivakami," one said softly. Arun was startled at first. But the next moment a strange happiness rose in his heart. Hearing her name sound together with his, his heart beat fast.

He told his friend Kumar. Kumar laughed. "What does it matter to you if the town talks? Are you happy that her name rings with yours?" Arun lowered his head shyly. "On days when I cannot see her, such talk is what gives me life," he said. Kumar nodded.

But there was a subtlety. The villagers did not know the whole truth about him. Nor did he know whether Sivakami's heart was really inclined to him. He also realised that before that truth was known, the tales spread by the town could affect him in any way. So he held his joy in check.

When the car reached its place, the crowd dispersed. Arun stood at the temple door and prayed. "If my love is true, show me the way too," he asked. A few months later he told his parents honestly and asked them to approach Sivakami's family formally. The talk of the town finally brought the two families together.

To reflect on

When people talk about you, do you separate the truth from the noise, and what comfort or caution does it give you?
