Explanation

In this verse the heroine addresses the night. The night puts all living beings to sleep and shows grace. But she alone has no sleep; therefore she becomes the night's only companion. It is a graceful fancy: the night and she are both awake, and become companions to each other.

A gentle humour and sorrow are mixed here. The heroine says the night stays awake with her like a friend. When all men sleep, her only companion awake is the night. The address aliththiraa shows direct speech to the night. It is a lovely custom of Tamil akam poetry known as addressing the night.

In our lives too those who suffer in loneliness sometimes talk to the night and the moon. Such speech is a way of letting sorrow out. There is nothing wrong in it. But those near can also give a small listening ear to those who struggle in the loneliness of night. For one who cannot sleep, a telephone call is comfort for many days. In the Kural the night is praised as one who "bestows" on living beings like a mother; yet that grace does not reach the heroine. The lack of grace makes her sorrow sharper.

A story

Urmila's Long Sleep

In Valmiki's Ramayana Urmila's place is very small. The daughter of Janaka and wife of Lakshmana, she stayed behind in Ayodhya when her husband went to the forest with Rama. The Ramayana says Lakshmana stayed without sleep for fourteen years guarding Rama and Sita. Later traditional tales added one more thing about this wakefulness of Lakshmana.

According to that later tradition, Lakshmana prayed to the goddess Nidra so that he need not sleep. The goddess appeared and said this was possible only if someone else took his share of sleep. Urmila came forward to take that sleep, the tale says. For fourteen years she slept the sleep of two. This is not in Valmiki; it is a later folk and literary tradition.

We must tell this tale with caution; it is not in the source text. Yet it gives room for imagining how a woman might have borne the nights of separation. The heroine of the Kural says, "The world sleeps; I am awake." In the tale Urmila took sleep itself for her husband.

These are two different ways of facing the night. One is to stay awake and suffer. The other is to sleep and pass the days. In both the pain of parting is hidden. Urmila's state is the respect that poets have given to a silent character of the Ramayana.

In oral traditions such companion tales fill what the source text lacks. Guarding them lovingly without confusing them with the source is also a lesson worth learning.

Everyone who passes the night without a companion can see themselves in these tales. But for her too a dawn came; after fourteen years the husband returned. That is the comfort.
