Explanation

In this verse Valluvar compares the grace of mutual love to rain. The world lives because the sky gives rain. In the same way the lover lives by the compassion the beloved shows. As indispensable as rain is to living, so indispensable is the beloved's grace to the one who loves.

Rain has a very high place in the Tirukkural. The chapter Vaan Sirappu, at the very start of the book of virtue, praises rain. To compare the grace of love with so exalted a thing is a great honour. When rain falls all rejoice; the parched land flourishes. When the grace of love is obtained, the longing heart flourishes likewise.

The word ali comes twice here. "Alikkum ali" is the gift given, that is grace. Rain falls without any expectation; the idea is also hinted that the grace of love is best given generously, not after calculation.

In our lives even a small kind word from a loved one becomes rain to a parched heart. We too can give that rain to others; it requires no great expense. The word payandhu in "vaanam payandhatraal" also carries the sense of giving birth; the fancy of motherhood is there that the sky bears the rain.

A story

Andal's Rain Hymn

Andal's Thiruppavai consists of thirty verses sung in the month of Margazhi. The fourth of them is addressed to the rain. In that verse beginning "Azhi mazhaik kanna," Andal prays to the rain-deity. She calls him to enter the sea, draw its water, rise thundering, darken like the body of Vishnu and pour as rain.

In that prayer the rain is not a mere natural event; it is a form of the Lord's grace. Comparing the dark colour of Vishnu with the cloud is a beautiful fancy of bhakti tradition. The verse's hope is that if rain falls the land will flourish and the maidens' vow will go well.

For Andal the Lord's grace is like rain. She melted daily in thought of him. A doubt whether her love was equally returned appears now and then in her verses. But in the end her love was accepted; the guru-parampara says she united with Ranganatha at Srirangam.

The heroine of the Kural says, "As the sky is to those who live, so the grace of the beloved to the lover." Andal's verse is the devotional form of that same feeling. As rain gives life to the world, the Lord's grace gives life to the devotee.

The Margazhi vow custom continues in homes through many generations. Drawing kolam at dawn and singing the verses are enduring expressions of love. The tradition of honouring rain also shows the gratitude of agrarian life.

Even today on Margazhi mornings this verse resounds in the temples and homes of Tamil Nadu. In that sound rain, grace and love stand mingled.
