Explanation

In this verse the heroine's doubt is expressed directly. When the one we love does not love us, what can he do for us? How would his help or grace reach us? Though it is posed as a question, a deep despair lies behind it. She realises there is no use where there is no love.

In the words evan seypavo there is also a faint mockery. What would he do? He can do nothing, because the love basic to his actions is lacking in him. A gift without love is a mere ritual; help without love is a mere duty. What gives life to an act is that it is done with love.

Many commentators note that this verse also applies to the relation between God and the devotee. Even when we love God, devotees sometimes fear that He may not love them. But the bhakti tradition believes God is one who always returns love for love.

In our lives, when those we love do not love us in return, before asking for help we should honestly examine the nature of that relationship. Sometimes it is better to seek the place that gives love than to stand longing where love is absent. In "naam kaadhal kondaar" the heroine's use of "we" to include others is the charm of raising one person's sorrow to the sorrow of many.

A story

The Longing of Manikkavacakar

The Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam says that Manikkavacakar, born at Tiruvadavur near Madurai, served as minister to the Pandya king. The king gave him a large sum to buy horses. On the way, at Tirupperunturai, the Lord appeared as a guru and claimed him, tradition says. He spent that wealth on temple service for Shiva.

Manikkavacakar's Tiruvacakam is among the most moving works of Tamil devotional literature. In it he expresses with great subtlety his longing toward the Lord. In many songs he melts in the sense, "You who claimed me have still not come." In some songs he sings in the voice of a heroine, thinking of the Lord as beloved.

In such passages the doubt arises, "We have loved; has He not loved us?" But that doubt and longing dissolve into the Lord's grace at the end of the song. He asks and begs for the boon of never being parted from the Lord.

The Kural's heroine asks, "When he does not love, what will he do for us?" Manikkavacakar turns that question at the peak of devotion into a loving appeal. His songs show that the way to obtain the Lord's grace is to establish Him in one's love.

The Tiruvacakam is still recited in Shiva temples. The proverb "One who does not melt at the Tiruvacakam will not melt at any word" shows its pathos. The tradition of turning longing into music is a great treasure of our culture.

At last, tradition says, he merged with the Lord at Thillai. The message of the tale is that a longing that began as one-sided love was fulfilled as love on both sides.

To reflect on

When love seems unreturned, do you press harder on the person or turn the energy toward something that will return it?
