Explanation

This verse shows the two faces of memory. In the previous verse memory bore up her life; here the same memory burns her heart. The heroine says "marappariyen," that is, she does not even know how to forget. Whenever she remembers, the heat of separation strikes her heart. Yet if forgetting might spare her, she fears that would be a still crueller state.

"Evanaavan markol" is a question: "What would become of me?" She cannot even imagine the pain that forgetting would bring. Memory is her life, and if she gave it up only emptiness would remain. So she chooses the memory that burns.

This is a fine verse on the contradiction in love. Joy and sorrow rise from one and the same memory. It is like a burning lamp, which gives light and also scorches the hand that holds it.

Commentators note that the verse stands in deliberate contrast with the opening two, where remembering was sweet. The sweetness has not vanished; it has simply acquired heat in separation. A further remark: the heroine does not wish the burning to end by forgetting, which shows that her pain is itself a form of loyalty. The word "sutum" points to the heat of love's sickness. In Sangam literature too love's ache is compared to fire.

A story

Shakuntala and Durvasa's Curse

In the fourth act of Kalidasa's play Abhijnana Shakuntalam a delicate event occurs. King Dushyanta married Shakuntala by the Gandharva rite in the hermitage of the sage Kanva and returned to his capital, promising to send for her soon. Afterwards Shakuntala waited in the hermitage, thinking only of him.

One day the irascible sage Durvasa came to the hermitage and called out. Shakuntala was so deep in thought of the king that she did not hear. Taking this as an insult, the sage cursed her: the one on whom you dwell so deeply, forgetting me, will not remember you. At the pleading of her friends he softened, saying the curse would end when she showed a token of recognition. Thus the verse and the play meet at one point: the burning of memory is the price of faithfulness.

Later, when the ring is found, the king regains memory, and his remorse then is one of the high moments of the play.

This incident throws light on the verse from another side. Shakuntala is the one lost in memory, and Dushyanta the one who forgets. For the one who remembers, memory burns; the one who has forgotten feels nothing. The heroine of the verse fears forgetting, whereas Shakuntala suffers the sorrow of being forgotten. Yet in both there is the same truth, that remembering is the real measure of love.
