Explanation

In this verse the look of the evening and the heroine's mind merge into one. 'Pani arumbi' can mean that cold appears, or that dew or tears bud up. 'Paidhal' is dejection and paleness. 'Thuni' is a word for both sorrow and bitterness of heart. These three come softly like buds and, as the evening deepens, blossom into pain. The word 'arumbi', 'budding', appears twice, and its repetition adds to the sound of growth.

The commentators read the verse a little differently. Some take it that the evening itself brings the dew and the paleness. Others take it that the heroine's tears and dejection are stirred up by the arrival of the evening. In both readings one thing is clear: evening and mind feed each other. As the cold and darkness outside gather, loneliness within gathers too.

In our day we can feel this on any winter evening. When the mind is already weak, darkness and cold deepen low spirits. Things that help are lighting a lamp, talking to someone dear, listening to music. Valluvar does not stop at telling us of the sorrow. He shows how sorrow grows, so that we may learn to notice it and handle it with skill.

A story

A Cloud on the Hill

Here we may recall Kalidasa's poem the Meghaduta, the Cloud Messenger.

A yaksha, a servant of Kubera, was careless in his duty and was cursed by Kubera to live for a year away from his wife, on the hill of Ramagiri. Somehow he got through eight months. But on the first day of the month of Ashadha, when he saw a cloud leaning on the peak of the hill like an elephant, his heart shook. If even those who are happy are stirred at the sight of a rain cloud, the poem asks, what must it do to one who is parted from his beloved?

The yaksha made that cloud his messenger. He asked it to go north to Alaka and tell his wife his news. He described the way for it: rivers, hills, towns, the mansions of Ujjayini. At the end he gave the marks of his own house. There, in the evening, his wife would be sitting, he said, pale, thin like a lotus touched by frost, with tears in her eyes. He asked the cloud to comfort her.

The part of the poem where the yaksha shows the cloud its way is very beautiful. He points out the river banks, the hill slopes and the city of Ujjayini, speaking with a care like that of a host to a traveller. When the cloud finds her, he begs it to lower its thunder and give the message gently. His words show his worry that, alone in the evening, she may be frightened by the rumbling. This habit of joining one's own sorrow to another's is very close to the heart of Valluvar's heroine.

Valluvar tells of sorrow budding in the evening, when dew and cold spread; Kalidasa tells of that same sorrow through a cloud. The language and the age differ, but the heart of the parted is one.
