Explanation

The sound of the cowherd's flute is ordinarily a sign of sweetness. In the fields and the grazing lands, the music heard in the evening enchants the mind. But to the heroine who suffers in separation, the same flute turns cruel. It is a messenger announcing that evening has come, and since the evening burns like fire, the message it brings is sorrow. The one who brings the message shares in the pain of the message. So the flute becomes for her a weapon, something that kills.

The commentators differ slightly on this verse. Some say the flute's sound is the messenger because it announces the coming of evening. Others say that evening itself arrives like a fire, and the herdsman's flute serves as that fire's messenger. In both readings the idea is the same: sweet music too gives pain when the mood changes. What gives us joy depends on the readiness of our mind.

Even today a song that seems pleasant to one person can bring tears to another who recalls it with a lost loved one. So, when others are in grief, we should understand that a sound sweet to us may hurt them. In this verse Valluvar teaches that delicate human understanding.

A story

The Evening Flute of Gokula

This is part of the story of Krishna from the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana.

In Gokula and Vrindavan, each evening Krishna came back with his companions and the herd of cows. The dust raised by the cattle turned the sky golden. When the sound of his flute floated from afar, the gopis would leave their work and run to their doorways. That evening flute was a message of joy for them; hearing it, they remembered the sweetness of being together through the night.

One day Akrura came and took Krishna and Balarama away to Mathura. The gopis stood in tears watching the chariot go. From that day the evenings of Gokula changed. The cows returned as before. The dust rose in the same gold. Only the sound of that flute was missing.

Afterwards, whenever some herdsman played a flute in the evening, the memory of the old music pained the gopis. That sweet sound itself became the messenger of separation. The Bhagavata sings of their yearning with deep feeling. Even when Uddhava, sent by Krishna, came to console them, their hearts were still longing for the evening flute.

This tradition shows beautifully that the sweetness of music lies not in the music but in the mind that hears it. Valluvar says the same in his verse. Even so, their love for Krishna did not lessen; love was both their strength and their sorrow.

To reflect on

Is there a sound, song or scent that once gave you joy and now brings an ache? What does it tell you about what you miss?
