Explanation

'Veqki aam aakkam' means the growth that comes by coveting and seizing what belongs to another. Valluvar forbids even desiring such growth. He also gives the reason: 'vilaivayin maantarkku aridhaam payan.' In farming it is easy to sow and tend; the nature of the crop shows at harvest. In the same way, one who gathered wealth by a wrong path feels the pain only at the time when he ought to enjoy it. Then the wealth gives no pleasure; it gives fear, blame and worry.

Commentators interpret 'maantarku arithu' in several ways. Some say it is hard to enjoy the fruit; others, hard for it to turn out a good fruit; others, hard to attain honour by it. The inner meaning of all is the same: wealth that came by a wicked path does not in the end bring contentment.

A man who gathers wealth in search of pleasure loses pleasure itself if the path of the wealth was wrong. Peace leaves the house, relationships grow distant, and the fear of punishment by the state or society creeps in. He cannot sleep peacefully at night. These are the bitter fruits that come 'at the time of the yield'.

This verse is practical counsel. It asks us to look not only at today's profit but also at tomorrow's consequence. The wise who think in the long term do not desire shortcut wealth.

A story

Duryodhana's Bitter Harvest

This is the story of Duryodhana told in the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata and the parvas that follow. Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice with great splendour and shone with vast wealth at Indraprastha. The marvellous hall built by Maya displayed their prosperity. When Duryodhana went to see it, his mind burned. The story says that he took floor for water and water for floor, stumbling and falling, and was humiliated. That humiliation and the Pandavas' prosperity inflamed his envy and greed.

Returning to Hastinapura, Duryodhana told his uncle Shakuni, "The Pandavas' wealth pricks my eyes. You must take it and give it to me." Shakuni did not choose the path of open war but of gambling. With deceitful dice he won Yudhishthira's wealth, kingdom, brothers and Draupadi. Indraprastha went to Duryodhana. The Pandavas had to go into twelve years of forest exile and one year of incognito life.

Did that wealth bring Duryodhana joy? His palace was always surrounded by fear. The disgrace of insulting Draupadi lay on him. When the Pandavas returned after their exile, he refused to give back the kingdom. Krishna came as envoy and asked for just five villages. Duryodhana stubbornly said, "Not even land the size of a needle's point."

The result was the Kurukshetra war. His hundred brothers and friends like Bhishma, Drona and Karna perished. At last he lay fallen by a pool with a broken thigh. The 'fruit at the time of yield' was this bitter for him.

He never enjoyed in peace the wealth he had won by deceit. The gain he wanted made him lose family, friendship and kingdom.
