Explanation

The couplet sets two things against each other: the "dark cleverness" called theft and the "strength" called measure. Kaar means darkness. A thief is often skilled in cunning and scheming, but Valluvar will not honour that skill with the name of knowledge; he calls it darkness. Knowledge should be light, and a cleverness that ruins others is dark.

On the other side Valluvar names alavu, "measure", a strength. Keeping desire within limits is a great power, and it does not come easily. Many think that giving in to desire is strength. In Valluvar's view real strength is self-restraint.

Kanda il means "is not seen, does not exist". That is, in people who know measure the thought of stealing simply does not arise. Commentators explain that good people who know the limit do not consider stealing to be cleverness.

Today some hold that being smart means finding shortcuts. This verse corrects that idea. True intelligence is joined with honesty. And because holding to honesty needs strength of will, the verse concludes that this is the real power.

Our tradition lists santosha, contentment, among the observances of yoga, and the "strength called measure" recalls just that. A contented person does not covet another's goods, and where there is no craving, cunning has no work. In this way, the way Valluvar shows removes theft not by outside restraint but by inner fullness. The one who has inner fullness is truly rich.

A story

The Hand of Ramakrishna

This story comes from the memories of disciples about Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who lived at the Dakshineswar temple in nineteenth-century Bengal. It is a life incident handed down by his devotees, and small details may differ from book to book. Those who recorded his life say that Ramakrishna regarded even touching gold and money as a hindrance to his mind.

The disciples relate that once, while he slept, someone placed a coin under his bedding. As soon as he lay down he woke in discomfort. The coin is said to have caused pain in his body, and his hand is said to have gone rigid when it touched the coin. Whether this truly came from the touch or from the result of long inner discipline can be debated. In either case the incident shows how far he kept theft and greed from himself.

Devotees also recall that when a wealthy man came forward to offer a large sum, he did not accept it, and he kept nothing beyond what he needed. His life was an example of simplicity.

The couplet comes to mind: "The dark cleverness called theft is not seen in those who have taken up the strength called measure." For one who has made measure his strength, the thought of stealing does not arise. Since he desired nothing beyond need, the dark cleverness had no room to enter him. The story shows us that purity.
