Explanation

The last couplet of the chapter ends by showing two outcomes. It says that for thieves the "state of life" slips away, and for non-thieves the "world of the gods" does not refuse. Thallu means to remove or let slip. Commentators take uyirnilai as "the standing of the body, the stability of life".

There are two kinds of explanation here. In one, the thief faces danger to his life and standing in this world itself; if caught, punishment and disgrace destroy his life. In the other, after death such people cannot reach the world of the gods. Puththelulagu is the high world where the gods dwell. For those who do not steal, that world makes way without obstruction.

This idea is not new to Indian tradition. Many traditions believe that the fruit of deeds follows both in this life and beyond. Valluvar uses that belief to give fear and hope together. It is equally right to take the central message as: dharma gives its fruit within itself.

Thus the chapter ends where it began: respect and well-being belong to those without theft. Practising honesty even in small things is therefore the way to our own uplift, which is the complete message of the chapter.

A story

Nachiketas Declines the Wealth

The Katha Upanishad tells the story of a boy named Nachiketas. His father Vajasravasa gave away all his possessions in a great sacrifice. But what he gave were only weak cows that had gone dry. Seeing this, Nachiketas was troubled. He asked his father again and again, "To whom will you give me?" The angry father said, "I give you to Yama."

Nachiketas went to the abode of Yama. Yama was not there, and for three nights Nachiketas waited at the gate without food. When Yama returned, realising the fault of neglecting a guest, he offered three boons. With the first two Nachiketas asked that his father's anger be calmed, and for knowledge of a sacrifice. With the third he asked the secret of what becomes of the soul after death.

Yama tried to avoid that question. He offered long-lived sons and grandsons, elephants, horses, gold, and rule over the earth. Nachiketas refused plainly: "Wealth does not satisfy a man. You are the lord of death, and your own life is also impermanent. I want only that secret." Because he stood without craving, Yama accepted him as a worthy student and taught him the immortality of the soul.

Nachiketas sought neither another's goods nor royal wealth. He sought only knowledge. The story recalls the couplet, "The world of the gods does not refuse those who do not steal." To the boy who did not covet wealth but wanted true knowledge, the door of the higher world opened without obstacle.
