Explanation

This verse rests on the Indian belief that births go on in succession. 'Orumaikkan' is one birth, and 'ezhumai' is seven births. Seven here is not a count but a general word for many births. The thought is that the learning one gains in this birth does not perish even when the body perishes; it follows the soul and gives protection.

'Emaappudaiththu' means having protection. Wealth may be stolen or destroyed, and land may be taken away. But learning is a protection that none can take. This gives meaning even to those who do not believe in rebirth. Some explain 'ezhumai' as seven generations: the learning one gains does good to his children, their children, and so on for seven generations. In both meanings the lasting benefit of learning is stressed.

Those who accept rebirth take this as wisdom that continues from birth to birth. Those who do not take it as culture handed on through generations. In both, learning goes beyond the limit of the single person.

In life today, when one in a family gets an education, his children and grandchildren share its benefit. An educated mother guides her children, and they guide theirs. So the learning of one generation raises many generations.

A story

Jada Bharata

The fifth canto of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of a king named Bharata. He was the son of Rishabhadeva, and tradition says this land is called Bharata after him. Bharata gave up his kingdom and went to a forest to perform austerity. He had good wisdom and austerity.

One day on a river bank a doe gave birth to a fawn and died. Bharata took pity on the young one and raised it. In time his mind clung to the deer. At the time of death his thought stood fixed on the deer. As a result he was born as a deer.

Yet the wisdom and austerity he had gained in the former birth were not lost. Even as a deer he remembered his past birth. Realising his mistake, he lived near the hermitages of sages in the forest and left his body. In the next birth he was born in a family of Brahmins. Remembering his former births again, he resolved not to be caught in worldly attachment.

He did not speak and behaved like a simpleton. So he was called Jada Bharata. Once, King Rahugana of Sindhu-Sauvira, travelling in a palanquin, had him made one of the bearers. Because Jada Bharata walked slowly so as not to tread on an ant, the king rebuked him. Jada Bharata calmly gave a teaching of wisdom. The king, amazed, fell at his feet.

This story is an example of how learning gained in one birth stood by him through many births. Even when he was born a deer the wisdom did not forsake him, and when he was born a man it shone out. Learning was a protection to him in every birth.
