Explanation

This verse shows that the joy learning gives is not a private joy alone. When the learned find delight in a book or an art, they see the world gaining the same delight. That sight deepens their wish to learn more. That is, the joy of learning grows when it is shared.

Some read the line 'thaam inpuruvathu ulagu inpuk kandu' in two ways. One: seeing that the world delights as they themselves delight through what they have learned. The other: seeing the world praise and rejoice in their knowledge. In both, learning is not a private property but a common delight.

The word 'kaamuruvar' expresses desire. That is, they have an unending love for learning, and an inner love that the world too should gain learning and be glad. So the learned strive to teach others what they have learned.

An example in life today is the joy that a teacher, a writer or a scientist feels in sharing a discovery. It is natural for one who has read a good book to want to tell others about it and to be happy when they appreciate it. That joy draws him toward the next book.

Why do the learned rejoice to see the world rejoice? Because true knowledge does not grow selfishness; it seeks the good of others too. This is the nature of the learned that Valluvar speaks of in other chapters as well.

A story

Ramanuja at Thirukkoshtiyur

In the Vaishnava tradition of Tamil Nadu the life of Ramanuja is honoured. He was born at Sriperumbudur and, excelling in learning, became an acharya at Srirangam. One story takes him to Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi.

Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi was a great sage. With him lay the inner meaning of the eight-syllable mantra as a tradition. Ramanuja went to him to hear it. Tradition says that Nambi sent him back many times. Eighteen times Ramanuja walked there and begged with humility. At last, seeing his eagerness and humility, Nambi's heart melted.

Nambi taught him the meaning of the mantra, but commanded, 'You must not tell this to anyone. If you do, you will go to hell.' Ramanuja bowed to the teacher and went. But his mind was not at peace. His heart ached that the whole world should receive this rare meaning.

The next day he climbed to the top of the tower of the Thirukkoshtiyur temple. People were gathered below. In a loud voice Ramanuja proclaimed the meaning of the mantra to all. The people were glad. Hearing of it, Nambi called him in anger. 'Why did you break what I told you?' he asked. Ramanuja said, 'Master, all who heard this will be saved. If by my going to hell alone they gain joy, that is acceptable to me.' Nambi was moved, embraced him and praised him, 'You are indeed Emperumanar,' tradition says.

Seeing the world gain the joy he had gained, Ramanuja sought still more knowledge. To this day all bow to that tower.
