Explanation

This verse shows how unfitting it is for the unlearned to wish to speak in fine words. The comparison is somewhat harsh: as it is an unfulfilled wish for a woman lacking the natural marks of womanhood to desire the fullness of womanhood, so it is unfulfilled for an unlearned man to long for skill in words. The aim is not to ridicule the body but to show the futility of a wish without the basic fitness for it.

Commentators differ slightly on 'sorkaamuruthal'. Some take it as a desire to speak in assemblies; others as a desire for the grace and savour of words. In both, there is no difference on this: without learning, such a wish will not be fulfilled.

The comparison is clear because it shows a limit set by nature. One who lacks the base of learning cannot become a scholar with empty words. Sweetness of speech is the fruit of learning, and it cannot be had without practice. The inner meaning is that if one wishes for eloquence one must first learn.

In life today many wish to win fame in public speaking. But without the habit of reading, the art of speech does not grow. Good speakers have read thousands of pages. If we keep this verse in mind, we see that desire must go with practice.

Words are not only ornament; knowledge must stand behind them. The quality of knowledge shows in speech. So one who loves good speech must love good books.

A story

Shishupala

In the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata, at the Rajasuya sacrifice held at Indraprastha, the question arose as to who should receive the first honour. Bhishma proposed Krishna as the best. Sahadeva supported it and offered the arghya to Krishna.

Then Shishupala, king of Chedi, rose in anger. 'With so many kings and sages in this assembly, is the first honour to go to a herdsman?' he said, insulting Krishna. He abused Bhishma and the Pandavas too. He spoke at length. His words were fierce, but there was neither knowledge nor right conduct in them.

Without knowing Krishna's qualities, Shishupala sneered only at his birth and old events. The scholars in the assembly shut their ears and loathed the speech. Bhishma said calmly, 'Krishna is the source of the world; this man speaks out of ignorance.' Krishna, having promised his aunt to bear a hundred faults of Shishupala, quietly listened to his hundred insults. When the hundred was crossed, he sent his discus and felled him.

Shishupala wished for skill in words and fame in the assembly. But his words, lacking true knowledge and humility, won no respect in the assembly and brought him only ruin. To wish for words is easy; to one who has not the learning and restraint to go with them, it brings no good.

When the ignorant speak loudly their lack shows to all. When the learned speak calmly their words endure. The respect won by Bhishma's quiet words, and the failure of Shishupala's noise, are the proof.
