Explanation

An unlearned man may have gained dignity by appearance. His dress, rank and wealth may bring him respect. But this verse says that when he begins to converse with the learned, that dignity droops and fades. 'Thagaimai' means dignity, worth and fitness. 'Thalaippeythu' means joining and drawing near.

Why does this happen? Conversation is the instrument that reveals the depth of a mind. The outward show can easily be decorated, but a mind without depth stands exposed in conversation. Every opinion he states is heard closely by the learned and tested by further questions. When he stumbles for an answer, his dignity falls.

'Sorvupadum' means to sag and fall. As the upper floor leans when a building lacks a foundation, dignity that lacks the foundation of learning leans at the slightest push of conversation. Some commentators put it simply: just conversing with the learned will destroy his dignity.

By this verse Valluvar does not tell the unlearned to avoid the learned; he urges them to see their lack and learn. Filling the lack is the lasting way, rather than hiding it.

In life today a person may be respected for rank, dress and the show of speech. But when a deep conversation comes, true knowledge shows. So improving inner knowledge rather than polishing the outward look gives lasting respect.

A story

The Blue Jackal

There is an entertaining story in the Panchatantra. A jackal went to a town near a forest in search of food. Chased by dogs, it ran and fell into a vat of dye. When it rose out of the blue dye, its whole body had turned a beautiful blue.

The jackal went into the forest. Seeing its new colour, the animals were afraid. 'This is a strange being come from the sky,' they thought. The jackal understood its chance. 'I am your king, made by Brahma. My name is Kakudruma,' it announced. The lion, tiger and elephant all bowed to it. It sat on a throne and gave commands. It even drove away its own kind, the jackals, so that they should not come near.

One night in the moonlight, from a distance came the howling of a pack of jackals. The blue jackal's instinct awoke. Hearing the voice of its kin, it could not hold back. It too lifted its head and began to howl. At once the animals knew the truth. 'This is no king but a jackal,' said the tigers and lions, and sprang upon it. Its dignity broke and ended in a single howl.

The blue colour gave it outward dignity, but the nature behind it had not changed. When the sound came, its truth showed. Dignity without the base of learning falls like this at a single voice.

The same happens in conversation with the learned. The rank and dress that are like a coat of paint vanish in talk. This story is a warning not only for children but for grown people.

To reflect on

What outward things (title, dress, wealth, confident tone) do you rely on that a deep conversation might see through?
