Explanation

'Koozh' is food, wealth; 'kudi' is the citizens. 'Orungu izhakkum' is lose together. A government with a bent sceptre that rules without thinking loses its wealth and its people at once, says Valluvar.

Wealth and people are linked. Without people there is no wealth; without wealth people do not stay in the land. Under unjust rule people leave or fall into poverty, so tax and income fall. Both are destroyed together.

'Soozhaadhu' is without thinking or inquiring. Tyranny often comes not only from evil intent but from thoughtlessness. If a king does not consider the results of his acts, ruin is sure.

'Kol kodi' is the sceptre bending. A bent rod cannot measure straight. A bent sceptre cannot deliver justice. This links with the balance simile of the earlier chapter on impartiality.

Commentators take 'koozh' as food and wealth, and 'kudi' as citizens and family. Some stretch 'kudi' to the king's own line; that is, he loses his own clan.

In the Hindu tradition Nahusha is an example. He was a good king and gained Indra's post. But power took his thought away. He made sages carry his palanquin. He kicked Agastya. For this he received a curse and lost his position.

In our lives too, thinking of the results before deciding is dharma. Power must not be allowed to dull thought.

A story

Nahusha Loses Indra's Throne

The story of Nahusha comes in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. Nahusha, son of Ayu, was a famous good king. When Indra disappeared from his post, burdened by the guilt of killing Vritra, the gods and sages seated Nahusha on Indra's throne. By penance and dharma he had earned the right.

But the wealth and power of the heavens changed his thinking. He began to think himself the real Indra. He wished to make Indra's wife Shachi his own wife. She refused, being faithful to Indra.

Shachi went to the gods' teacher Brihaspati. On his advice she told Nahusha, "I will accept you if you come in a palanquin carried by sages." Nahusha, whose judgment had gone, accepted without thinking. He made seven sages carry his palanquin.

In his hurry he said "sarpa, sarpa" (go fast) and kicked Agastya. Agastya in anger cursed, "Become a serpent." So Nahusha fell from Indra's post and became a python, says the Mahabharata.

He lost not just position. His wealth, fame and penance were destroyed in a moment. This is the 'orungu izhakkum' of verse 554. Power without thought makes one lose everything together.

The Mahabharata also says that later, as a python, Nahusha answered Yudhishthira's questions and was freed of the curse. He recovered in some measure through humility what he lost through the lack of it.

Nahusha's fall did not come from lack of strength. It shows that even a good man who acts thoughtlessly in power will fall.

We can learn from Nahusha not to be proud in success and to consider the results of our acts.
