Explanation

It is only fair to reward a spy. A good spy works risking his life. He deserves praise and reward for his service. But how it is done is the point Valluvar attends to. If someone is praised in the court in a way all can know, it will be revealed that he is a spy. He can then no longer work; his life is in danger; and the king's very system of agents is exposed. This is what Valluvar means by 'purappaduththaan aagum marai', he becomes the one who brought his secret outside.

The verse also shows a larger truth: some good deeds cannot be celebrated openly. If celebrated openly, their very purpose is spoiled. Those who do such deeds sacrifice the fame that is due to them. Only the few who know of their sacrifice honour them in their hearts. Their due must be given silently.

'Sirappariya' may be taken as 'so that others know' or 'he alone knows'. Some commentators see it as a warning that to honour him will open a way for others to find out. In either case, the idea is that work done in secret needs secret gratitude.

In life today we can apply this to helpers whose identity must not be revealed, to whistle-blowers and to certain humanitarian workers. Protecting them and honouring them must happen together.

A story

Honour Given in Silence

One day before the Chithirai festival in Madurai, the temple administrative officer Sundaresan was in great worry. Every year during the festival some people plotted to target the temple jewels and hundi money. That year too there was suspicion that something might happen.

To find out, Sundaresan trusted Pandian, a worker who made garlands in the temple. Pandian mixed with the crowd, and everyone knew him only as a simple flower-seller. For a week he stayed among the crowd gathering news. He quietly told Sundaresan that some new faces were hanging around the jewel treasury and whispering at night.

On the strength of that news, security arrangements were made before the festival. The conspirators were caught. The temple jewels were protected. The festival passed peacefully. The temple trustees wished to praise the achievement: 'Who is responsible for this? Let us honour him on the stage.'

Sundaresan refused. 'I will not say who he is. If I put him on the stage, next year no one will trust him, and his safety will also be in danger,' he said. That evening he privately draped Pandian with a silk shawl and gave him temple prasadam along with a small purse. He said only, 'God knows your service, and I know it.'

Pandian continued the next year too, making garlands and mixing with the crowd. Sundaresan's silent honour protected both his safety and the continuity of his work. Today some people remember that there are many unnamed guardians like him at every festival.

When I express thanks, am I careful not to put anyone at risk?
