Explanation

The first verse mentioned several qualifications generally; this one picks out the three most essential. The phrase 'indispensable' makes clear that without them the embassy cannot succeed. Without affection, words sound like cold calculation. Without wisdom, they lack an edge. Without eloquence, even good intentions never reach the listener's heart.

The three work together. Affection decides the tone of the speech, wisdom decides the content, and eloquence shapes the form. The adjective 'considered' applies not only to eloquence but to the speaker's whole effort. Deciding beforehand what to say, what to leave unsaid and in what order is what a considered word is.

We meet these three in many places today. When a doctor gives a patient a grave diagnosis, whether it will be accepted depends on whether he gives it with affection, correct knowledge and fitting words. A participant in a negotiation may hold a very good view, but if he cannot express it, it is of no use. Developing all three is a duty for each of us. Eloquence is not just speaking beautifully; it is speaking so that the hearer's mind accepts. The same idea put one way may meet resistance and put another way may find welcome. So the beginning of eloquence is to consider the hearer's state before speaking. Affection gives this consideration, and wisdom shows the way to it.

A story

Hanuman Before Sita

From the Sundara Kanda of the Ramayana. In the Ashoka grove of Lanka, Sita sat in sorrow under the guard of rakshasis. After Ravana had finished threatening her and left, Hanuman, hidden in a tree, had watched it all. He thought long about how to begin speaking to her.

If a monkey suddenly appeared before her, she might fear it was one of Ravana's illusions. If he spoke in harsh Sanskrit, she might be more frightened. So he decided to speak in a soft and simple language, in loving words that a human being could understand. From the tree where he sat, he began to sing softly in a sweet voice of the glory of Rama.

He told her, in order and with gentle feeling, of Rama's lineage, his birth, his coming to the forest and the abduction of Sita. Sita looked up with tears. That affectionate voice slowly dissolved her doubts. Hanuman came gently down and stood with folded hands.

Even then Sita had doubts. How had he come, was he some magician of Ravana's? To reassure her Hanuman showed Rama's ring. Everything he told her about Rama was true. Sita pressed the ring to her heart and wept.

Because of love, Hanuman understood her heart as he spoke; because of wisdom, he knew how to approach her and what sign to show; because of eloquence, he melted her fear and raised her trust. When the three came together, the first light was born in the dark grove of Lanka.
