Explanation

This verse describes in three parts how an envoy's speech should be. The first is brevity: saying what must be said in a condensed and pithy way. Kings have little time, and a long speech wearies them. The art of the envoy is to contain the whole message in a few words. The second is removing the unpleasant and the useless: leaving out words that are of no use, unpleasing or wounding. The third is speaking with a smile, so the face brightens and the heart is glad.

When the three combine, the speech finds a place even in the enemy's heart. The sweetness of the words softens the harshness of the news. A grave warning, if put gently, can be accepted. Yet the sweetness is not false flattery; it is reducing harshness and increasing respect even while stating the truth.

'That brings benefit' states the purpose of the embassy: the gain of speaking is good for the master. If someone speaks beautifully and accomplishes nothing, it is no embassy. Today, when writing an email or speaking to a customer, we can remember these three: brevity, sweetness and usefulness. Idle talk wastes both time and trust. To speak briefly is not easy. Cutting the needless out of a long talk requires deep understanding. Only one who knows the essence of a message can say it in a sentence. So brevity is a sign of wisdom, sweetness a sign of affection, and usefulness a sign of purpose.

A story

The Swan's Message

From the Nalopakhyana of the Mahabharata. Nala, king of Nishadha, was supreme in beauty and virtue. One day in the garden of his palace he saw golden swans and caught one of them. The swan spoke in human speech: 'O king, let me go. In return I shall do you a good turn. I shall tell the princess Damayanti of Vidarbha about your glory.' Nala set it free.

The swan flew to Vidarbha. Damayanti was walking in the garden among her companions, and it alighted near her. It did not make a long speech. It did not say a harsh word or a needless one. In a sweet voice it said briefly, 'Nala of Nishadha is the best among men. If you two were united, both of you would be peerless.'

Those few words sank deep into Damayanti's heart. Without seeing Nala, she began to think of him. The swan then returned to Nala and told him of Damayanti's love. The sweet message flowed in both directions between two hearts.

The swan's embassy shows how much a short message can accomplish. It spoke of Nala's glory not in boast but in affection. It did not force Damayanti; it only showed her the path her mind already tended to follow. In the end a way was found for them to be joined.

The swan is an example of how words that are brief, sweet and cleared of anything needless can bring great benefit. The speech of the envoy Valluvar describes in this verse is of just that kind.
