Explanation

This verse names two qualities of a good friend. One is the ability to rebuke, to speak the truth until we weep; the other is the knowledge of the world's ways. 'Azhachchollal' means to speak truth so that we weep. People who praise with sweet words are found in crowds, but one who tells a painful truth for our growth is rare. Valluvar says to examine and choose such a person and take his friendship.

Here 'vazhakku' means the world's practice, justice and propriety. When he sees a position unsuited to us, the friend should know how to say clearly, 'This the world will not accept; this is not proper.' Love alone is not enough; knowledge and experience must go with it. A person with only love may hide our faults out of affection; a person with only knowledge may hurt us without love. One with both is the best friend.

The verse asks two responsibilities of us. First, to look for such friends carefully; second, when they rebuke us, to accept it without anger. A man who lives in a circle where everyone flatters him loses the chance to see his faults. This applies to leaders, managers and heads of families today.

It also tells us what kind of friend to be. The one who can say a hard thing to a friend, with affection and with knowledge, is giving the greatest gift. The one who only agrees may be pleasant but is a poor protector.

A story

Vidura's Rebuke

In the Mahabharata Vidura is a model friend and counsellor. He was Dhritarashtra's younger brother; though regarded in court as the son of a maidservant, he was high in wisdom and righteousness. Dhritarashtra was blind in the eyes, and Vidura knew that his love for his son had blinded his mind too.

When the order came to invite Yudhishthira to the game of dice, Vidura boldly opposed it. "King, this will destroy the family. This path of Duryodhana is cruel. If one is given up, the clan will survive. For the sake of the clan, one may be abandoned," he pleaded, tradition says. The whole assembly was startled, but with tears flowing he continued his words.

Each time, Dhritarashtra respected Vidura's word, but his love for his son overcame him. Sometimes he was pained and admitted, "What you say is true, Vidura," and then, charmed by Duryodhana's talk, he failed. However much Vidura wept or rebuked, he never abandoned his duty.

As the war drew near, Vidura again and again showed the way of peace. Later he broke his bow, set it aside, and withdrew, saying he would take no part in the war. It was not anger; it was the peace that comes after saying the truth as many times as it can be said.

Although Vidura's rebuke did not reform Dhritarashtra, its worth did not fade. His words, called Vidura Niti, are honoured as counsel even today. He is the one Valluvar calls able to rebuke until tears flow.
