Explanation

Valluvar speaks here of an unexpected benefit of misfortune. In times of wealth and position, it seems as though everyone is with us. We do not know who is a true friend and who is a friend only for convenience. Only in ruin can this be tested, so misfortune acts like a measuring rod, as the verse's simile says. 'Kol' is the rod used for measuring.

The phrase 'neetti alappadhu' shows the work of that rod. When one's closeness is measured in a crisis, it becomes clear who really stands with us and who withdraws. Loss is painful, but the knowledge that comes through that pain is priceless. In 'kettinum undor urudhi', 'urudhi' means benefit or gain.

The verse offers two lessons. One: when trouble comes, do not be overwhelmed; learn from it. Two: in comfortable times, think about the firmness of our relationships and begin to honour those who would stand by us in misfortune. In today's world, those who lose a job, fall ill or lose wealth come to know the true faces of their relations in this way.

There is also a gentler reading. The rod measures our own conduct towards others as well. When someone else is in trouble, we in turn are being measured. The question 'Who stood by me?' is closely followed by 'Whom did I stand by?'

A story

Nala and Varshneya

The story of Nala and Damayanti occurs in the Nalopakhyana of the Mahabharata. Nala was king of Nishadha and a follower of the righteous path. But under the influence of Kali he played dice with his brother Pushkara and lost his kingdom and all his wealth. When he fell, many who had been in the royal court left him.

Nala set out for the forest with Damayanti, hardly clothed. Of those who had praised him as king only a few stayed. Some citizens wept, but at Pushkara's command they were afraid to give him food or help. In that harsh time, it became clear who was genuine.

In this period of suffering Nala's charioteer Varshneya stood firm in his duty. When Nala and Damayanti worried about how to protect their children, Varshneya placed the children in his chariot and carried them safely to the house of Damayanti's father in Vidarbha. He remained true to Nala to the last, though Nala had neither wealth nor rank.

Damayanti, too, never lost her trust and love. Even when Nala left her, she kept searching for him. Later, when Nala regained his skill and honour, he remembered with gratitude who had been with him in the days of distress.

Misfortune acted as a rod. It stretched out Nala's kinsfolk and measured them, marking out the true ones. This is what Valluvar means by 'kettinum undor urudhi'.
