Explanation

In this verse Kambar unrolls a great list: above, the gods and the Three; in the middle, the sages; even the danavas, enemies of the gods; and then 'every other living being'. Knowledge is no one's private property. Good or wicked, high or low, all who learn, learn by her grace.

There is a fine point too: 'gnaanam purikindradhe', they practise wisdom. It is not only receiving knowledge but living by it. The asuras too had great learning; what they did with it is what made them asuras. Her grace is given to all; what we use it for is our own responsibility.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Kacha, Pupil of the Asuras' Teacher

From the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. In the war between the gods and the asuras, Shukracharya, teacher of the asuras, kept raising the fallen asuras to life with the Sanjivani, the art of reviving the dead. Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, did not have it. So the gods sent Brihaspati's son Kacha to Shukra as a pupil.

Shukra knew the boy was a son of the gods, yet he accepted him. A true teacher does not turn away one who comes to learn. The asuras killed Kacha again and again; once they burned him, mixed his ashes into wine and gave it to Shukra himself to drink. At the plea of his daughter Devayani, Shukra taught the Sanjivani to Kacha while Kacha was still inside his body. Kacha burst out, and with that same art brought his teacher back to life.

The story shows that knowledge belongs to gods and asuras alike. The asuras' teacher taught the gods' son, and the pupil used what he had learned first of all to save his teacher. 'All living beings practise wisdom by her grace.'

To reflect on

Whose good do you use your learning for? Has it ever served those who taught it to you?
