Explanation

This verse names four faults which, if the enemy has them, make him easy to defeat: fear, ignorance, lack of composure and lack of generosity. 'Anjum' is one who fears easily. 'Ariyaan' is one who does not know what should be done. 'Amaivilan' is one without calm and patience. 'Eekalaan' is one who does not give. Such a man is 'thanjam eliyan' to the enemy, very easy.

Fear stops action; ignorance leads to wrong decisions; lack of composure destroys clear thought; lack of generosity loses allies and support. Each is a weakness by itself; all four together are the recipe for total defeat.

One should note why generosity appears here. A king who rewards his soldiers and ministers wins their loyalty. Servants will not serve eagerly one who does not give, and enemies easily win them over. This applies to individuals too: the one who gains friendship and support is the one who acts with a generous heart.

'Amaivu' also points to calm and orderly conduct. One whose mind wavers cannot carry out his plans steadily. The enemy uses his mental confusion to win.

We should test these four in ourselves and remove step by step any that are there. Fear can be overcome by effort, ignorance by learning, restlessness by practice and ungenerosity by love.

A story

Uttara Kumara's Brave Words

In the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata an incident occurs. The Pandavas spent the last year of their hidden life in the kingdom of Virata. Arjuna, under the name Brihannala, was a dance teacher to princess Uttara. At that time the Kauravas attacked to seize the cattle of Virata.

King Virata was at war in another direction. In the palace only the prince Uttara Kumara remained. Before the women of the inner chambers he spoke bravely. 'If I get a good charioteer I alone will defeat the Kauravas. What are Bhishma, Drona and Karna before me?' he boasted.

To make his words real, Draupadi suggested calling Brihannala as charioteer. The prince set out in the chariot with Brihannala. On the battlefield, when he saw the Kauravas' vast army, his body trembled. 'I cannot defeat such a large army; take me back,' he begged.

He jumped from the chariot and began to run. Arjuna chased him and caught him, asking, 'Should one who spoke of valour run?' Then he revealed his true identity, seated Uttara Kumara as charioteer, fought himself and defeated the Kauravas.

In this tale Uttara Kumara is a mixture of the qualities 'anjum ariyaan amaivilan'. He was fearful, ignorant of the practice of war, and boasted without restraint. He would have been very easy prey to his enemies the Kauravas; he escaped only through the help of Arjuna.

The story is not to mock Uttara Kumara. He spoke out of youthful zeal and later, realising the truth, helped Arjuna. But it reminds us what happens if one challenges an enemy without knowing one's power.

Brave words and brave deeds are not the same. The lesson of the story is that before speaking one needs self-knowledge and preparation.
