The Might of Hatred · Pakaimaatchi

Pakaimaatchi shows how the faults of an enemy make hostility to him advantageous. Valluvar advises not to engage the strong, and to read in the enemy the lack of love, allies, wisdom, restraint and rectitude; and he warns that if we carry the same faults we too will be easily defeated.

Introduction

In the name 'Pakaimaatchi', 'maatchi' means excellence, but here in particular it means the assessment of the qualities and faults found in an enemy. That is, the chapter tells what kind of enemy it is profitable to face and what kind to avoid. Commentators classify it as 'describing the nature of enemies' and as 'the method of meeting hostility'. Since most verses in the chapter list faults that an enemy should not have, they also serve as a mirror for ourselves.

The first verse gives a basic practical counsel of statecraft: avoid conflict with the strong; contend only with the weak. This comes not from arrogance but from self-knowledge that knows one's own strength. From the second verse on, the verses list the faults an enemy should not have: lack of love, lack of allies, fearfulness, ignorance, lack of generosity, anger, lack of rectitude, lust and want of character. Such an enemy will be easily defeated, is the idea.

The subtlety of the chapter is that it serves both ways. When a king assesses his enemy he can use these verses to know his faults. But he can also test himself to see whether those same faults are in him. One who has love, allies, wisdom, restraint and rectitude is a hard opponent for enemies; one who lacks them is easy prey. So the deeper lesson of the chapter is not a strategy against enemies but a discipline of setting oneself right.

Applying this to life today: in competitive business, politics, lawsuits and sport, to assess the opponent's strength, to reckon one's own and to avoid unnecessary conflict is shrewdness. At the same time, wisdom is not to rejoice at others' faults but to guard ourselves so those faults do not come to us.

The chapter also shows that Valluvar did not consider enmity wholly avoidable. In politics and in life enmity will come, and the realistic view here is that it must be handled with wisdom. Still, the humility and harmony he spoke of in the chapter on Ikal come first; this chapter is the political clarity that serves when that is not possible.

The chapter should be read with the chapter on Ikal. Ikal advised avoiding inner enmity and resentment. Pakaimaatchi shows how to face the external enmity that cannot be avoided. Together they show Valluvar's twofold approach: first try to soften enmity through harmony; when that is not possible, approach it with wisdom.

Chapter story

The Faults of Ravana

In the Ramayana Ravana appears a powerful enemy, but looking closely we see that he had many of the faults this chapter lists. These very faults opened the way for Rama to defeat him. This is not a story to disparage Ravana; it is an example of how faults can destroy even great strength.

First, lust. Ravana desired Sita, another man's wife. He was of limitless power but did not know how to restrain desire. He himself had won boons from Shiva through devotion. Yet he failed to bring that power under dharma. Second, anger. On hearing the counsel of his brother Vibhishana, he boiled over and drove him out of the court. A king who is a slave to anger loses good counsel.

Third, lack of allies. In the beginning Ravana had numerous relatives and friends. But by his conduct they left him one by one. Vibhishana went to Rama. Maricha warned him. Kumbhakarna, though he fought out of duty, spoke plainly of Ravana's fault. Mandodari too counselled her husband. All warned; he heard no one.

Fourth, lack of rectitude. He carried off Sita by deceit. Sending Maricha as a golden deer to separate Rama and Lakshmana, he took Sita away in the guise of an ascetic. By this act wholly outside royal dharma he lost the support of righteousness. Fifth, not taking advice. In pride of his strength he thought Rama an ordinary man. He erred in assessing his enemy.

Because all these faults were together, even Ravana's immense power could not protect him. Rama reached Lanka with a simple vanara army and defeated him. Rama had love; he had allies like Sugriva, Hanuman and Vibhishana; he had wisdom, restraint and rectitude too. This difference decided the war.

Seen in the background of this chapter, the story makes it plain that victory and defeat are decided not by the number of armies alone but by qualities. We can see each fault Valluvar mentions in some form in Ravana.

Yet tradition does not forget the other side of Ravana: he was a great scholar, a musician and a devotee of Shiva. The story's warning is that power and knowledge without restraint and rectitude bring only ruin.

Before we weigh others by our strength, Ravana's fall reminds us to attend to setting our own faults right. Thus this story, which shows the enemy's faults, is also an invitation to self-examination for us.
