Explanation

This verse speaks of the weakness of one ruled by anger. 'Neengaan veguli' is one in whom anger does not depart. 'Niraiyilan' is one without 'nirai', restraint or self-control. Such a man is 'enjnaandrum yaangannum yaarkkum elidhu', an easy target at all times, in all places, to anyone, says Valluvar.

Why is anger a weakness? An angry man can be provoked easily. The enemy can deliberately goad him and make him take wrong decisions. In anger he will reveal his plans, drive away his helpers and strike at the wrong place. The very anger he is a slave to becomes a tool for the enemy.

'Nirai' is a very high quality in the Tamil tradition. To be restrained is the mark of personality. One who has nirai cannot easily be bent by anyone. The phrase 'yaangannum yaarkkum' says the angry man is easy for anyone in any place, because his weakness goes along with him.

In practice this applies to competition and negotiation. An angry negotiator loses easily. A calm one keeps his focus on his goal without giving room to the opponent's provocation. Those who react at once to inflammatory news online are easily provoked.

The practice of controlling our anger is not just a virtue; it is a practical strategy that protects us.

A story

Vali's Anger

In the Kishkindha Kanda of the Ramayana, Vali is a very powerful vanara king. His strength was extraordinary; he had a boon by which he took half the strength of any opponent into his own body. Tradition says he even carried Ravana bound in his tail around the seashore. Yet his anger brought him down.

An asura named Mayavi challenged Vali to battle. Vali chased him into a cave and told his younger brother Sugriva to wait outside. Many months passed and Vali did not return. Blood flowed out of the cave. Thinking Vali dead, Sugriva sealed the cave mouth with a great boulder, returned to Kishkindha and took up the rule.

When Vali returned after killing Mayavi, he found the cave sealed and boiled in anger. He thought his brother had plotted to kill him. His wife Tara advised, 'Let there be no anger; first inquire into the truth.' Vali would not listen. Nor did he accept Sugriva's attempts to explain. He drove him from the kingdom and took his wife.

That one anger paved the way for Vali's fall. Sugriva took refuge with Rama. When Vali came again to fight Sugriva, Rama shot an arrow from hiding and brought him down. Had Vali heard both Tara's warning and Sugriva's explanation, his ruin could have been averted.

This tale illustrates the verse 'neengaan veguli niraiyilan enjnaandrum yaangannum yaarkkum elidhu'. Vali was the world's mightiest warrior, but because he did not restrain his anger he became an easy target. None of his enemies could defeat him, yet his anger defeated him.

Tradition says that in his final moment Vali realised his fault and entrusted his son Angada to Rama and Sugriva. At the end he understood the result of anger.

The lesson of the story is that one who has not learnt to restrain anger, however strong he is, can fall in a moment.
