Ignorance · Kallaamai

This chapter shows the emptiness of speaking in an assembly without learning, and the disgrace that ignorance brings. It says that even those high in birth or wealth win no honour if they have no knowledge.

Introduction

After the chapter on Learning, Valluvar places the chapter on Ignorance. It is his way, after speaking of the worth of learning, to show directly the state of one who lacks it. When a light is shown first and then the darkness, the worth of the light becomes clearer. So this chapter stands as the direct opposite of Learning. Its aim is not to despise the unlearned but to warn and rouse them to seek learning. It also supports the aim of the Polity section, that one who is to rule must be a person of knowledge.

The first verse says that to speak in an assembly without knowledge of books is like playing at dice without a board. The second gives a comparison for how unfitting it is for the unlearned to long for fine words. The third points to the worth of silence: if the unlearned do not speak before the learned, even they are good. The fourth says that however clever the unlearned man's wit, the wise will not accept it. The fifth says that the dignity of the unlearned crumbles when he converses with the learned.

The sixth likens the unlearned to barren saline land: they exist, and that is all, with no use. The seventh compares the beauty of one without knowledge to a beautiful doll made of clay. The eighth says that wealth in the hands of the unlearned brings more pain than poverty in good people. The ninth sets the worth of knowledge above the pride of birth, saying that the unlearned of high birth cannot equal the learned of low birth. The tenth closes with the thought that as men differ from animals, so the unlearned differ from the learned.

These comparisons may seem harsh in places. Yet their purpose is not to insult the unlearned but to wake those who keep away from learning. Some commentators take 'kallaadavar' to mean those who, having the chance to learn, do not. It is not in Valluvar's heart to scorn those who never had the chance.

In our world degrees have become easy to get, but the learning that discerns has grown less. Giving opinions without reading, and arguing without depth, have spread. What this chapter tells us is this: do not speak without knowledge, and learn before you speak.

Chapter story

The Tale of Kalidasa

The tale of Kalidasa has been told in Indian culture for a long time. It is not historical evidence, but it is very famous in folk tradition. The story says that in his youth Kalidasa was an unlearned herdsman. One day he sat on a branch of a tree and was cutting the very branch he sat on. Some who saw his ignorance thought to make use of him.

The princess of that country, Vidyottama, was proud of her great learning. She had vowed to marry only the one who defeated her. The scholars whom she had defeated in debate wished to take revenge, and they brought this herdsman, who knew no language, announcing him as a great scholar, and said, 'He keeps a vow of silence and will debate only by signs.'

The debate began. The princess showed one finger; she meant 'Brahman is one.' He showed two fingers, and his thought was 'If you poke my eye, I will poke both of yours.' But the princess understood it as 'The truth is two.' Next she showed five fingers; he showed a clenched fist. The princess took it as 'The five elements join into one.' Accepting that she was defeated in the debate, she married him.

The truth soon came out. The princess was shocked. 'You are ignorant; you have cheated me,' she said, and drove him out of the palace. Kalidasa was heartbroken. He went to the temple of Kali and tried to cut off his tongue as an offering. Tradition says Kali then appeared and blessed him. By the grace of Saraswati his tongue became a fountain of poetry.

The story shows together the emptiness of ignorance and the strength of the longing to learn. Only when Kalidasa realised his ignorance did he seek learning. He learned all his life and became a poet. His Shakuntala, Meghaduta and Raghuvamsa are still honoured.

Sitting in the assembly in ignorance, he got no respect. When he gained knowledge, the whole world honoured him. The lesson is that speaking without knowledge leads only to deception, and speaking with learning brings honour. The disgrace is not ignorance itself but staying ignorant.

If we look closely at the tale, it holds three lessons. The first is how dangerous it is to speak in an assembly without knowledge. It was only because the herdsman did not speak that he looked like a scholar; had he said one word, his ignorance would have shown at once. This also shows the worth of silence of which the third verse speaks. The second is that the ignorant take others' words as suits them. In the pride of her learning the princess read great meanings into his gestures, and the tale subtly shows that her pride was itself a kind of ignorance.

The third lesson is that a chance is always there. It was because he was disgraced that Kalidasa saw his lack, and change began in the very moment he saw it. His life shows that time is no barrier to one who wishes to learn. So these verses should be heard not with fear but as an invitation.

Key lessons

  • Speaking in an assembly without knowledge of books is as futile as playing at dice without a board.
  • Even the unlearned win respect if they stay silent before the learned.
  • More than birth, wealth or beauty, it is knowledge that gives a person worth.
  • In conversation with the learned the gaps of the unlearned show, so it is best to begin learning.
  • Ignorance is no disgrace; staying ignorant despite the chance to learn is.
