Explanation

All humans have hands, feet, eyes and ears in the same pattern. But Valluvar says that does not make them human on that account. True humanity lies in being one in esteemed qualities. That is, likeness of character, not of form, is true likeness.

The couplet shows that even those born in one family can differ. Two born to the same parents may be alike in body yet as far apart as sky and earth in character. Some, in human form, behave like beasts. So people must be judged by character and not by form.

In the Ramayana Ravana and Vibhishana are brothers, born of one father and raised in one palace. Yet Ravana fell into pride and desire for another's wife, while Vibhishana stood by dharma. Alike in limbs, they differed in character. Vibhishana became close to Rama.

Some commentators take "veruthakka" as desirable, others as worthy of honour. "Veruthal" can also mean strong liking. In both, good character is the best likeness.

In our lives too we should learn to see how a person behaves, not where he was born or how he looks. One with love and honesty like ours is our true kin. The friendship of those alike in character lasts a lifetime.

A story

Ravana and Vibhishana

The story of Vibhishana comes in the Sundara Kanda and Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana and Vibhishana were brothers born to the sage Vishravas and Kaikasi. Both did penance to Brahma. Ravana asked for power and fame; Vibhishana asked for a heart ever fixed in dharma. Brahma gave both boons.

When Ravana abducted Sita and brought her to Lanka, Vibhishana advised him gently and respectfully, "Brother, desiring another's wife brings ruin. Give Sita back to Rama." Ravana was angered. When Vibhishana said the same again in the assembly, Ravana insulted him and kicked him. Patiently Vibhishana bowed and said, "You are my elder brother. I wished only your good. Even if you cast me out, I did my duty," and left.

When he came seeking refuge with Rama, Sugriva and others doubted him: "Can we trust the brother of the enemy?" Rama heard everyone's view and then said, "I will never abandon one who comes seeking refuge," and received Vibhishana lovingly. He promised to crown him king of Lanka.

After the war Vibhishana hesitated to perform the last rites for Ravana. Rama said, "Enmity ends with death. He was your brother. As much as he is mine, he is yours," and encouraged him. Vibhishana performed all the rites.

Brothers of one father, alike in limbs, differed like sky and earth in character. Ravana was a hero in form; Vibhishana was a hero in character. So Vibhishana became close to Rama and Ravana perished. The story explains Valluvar's "panbothal oppadhaam oppu".
