Explanation

Valluvar says that life without a smile is dark even in daytime. "Nagal" is smiling with a bright face. For those who cannot smile, even when the sun rises the world gains no light. The reason is that light is not outside but in the mind of the beholder. To one without a cheerful face even the sun seems dark.

A smile is the simplest sign of courtesy. It needs no money or skill, yet it opens others' hearts. People approach a bright-faced welcomer easily. People shrink in fear from one with a furrowed face though he be powerful. So one who cannot smile gains no relationships, and his world becomes a darkness of loneliness.

The incident of Krishna and Kubja fits. In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata, as Krishna enters the city of Mathura, the hunchbacked woman Kubja comes with sandal paste. Krishna spoke with her smilingly and asked for her paste. He approached her without scorning her bodily defect.

Some commentators take "nagal" as laughing, others as dealing sweetly. "Pagalum paatpattanru irul" is explained as darkness not leaving even by day, or darkness staying with the day.

In life today work pressure and worry furrow the face. But giving a small smile to whoever comes to the door lightens our own mind too. If a family begins the morning with smiles, the whole day will be full of light.

A smile is not lent, and it is not reduced by giving. So it can be given freely.

A story

Krishna Who Lifted Kubja with a Smile

In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana comes the incident of Krishna's coming to Mathura. At Kamsa's invitation, Krishna and Balarama entered the city of Mathura with Akrura. People stood gathered eagerly in the streets. Krishna walked looking on each with a smile.

On the way a washerman was carrying clothes meant for Kamsa. When Krishna asked for them he insulted him. Later a weaver gave clothes humbly. A garland-maker, Sudama, welcomed him gladly with flowers. Krishna blessed all of them with a pleasant face.

Next came a woman named Kubja, a palace maidservant who carried sandal paste for Kamsa. Her back was bent in three places. People were used to mocking her. She walked with bowed head and a sorrowful face. Krishna, looking at her with a sweet smile, said, "Fair one, for whom is this sandal paste? Will you not give me some too?"

Kubja's heart melted. In all this time no one had spoken to her so kindly. Of her own accord she anointed Krishna and Balarama with the paste. Krishna lifted her chin with two fingers and gently pressed her foot with his. Her body straightened and became beautiful.

A smile and a kind word lit up a dark life. Kubja afterwards invited Krishna lovingly to her house and honoured him. This is the character of one who can smile. By contrast Kamsa did not know a smile; he lived in the darkness of fear even by day. The world did not shine for him. Valluvar's "nagalvallar allaarkku maayiru gnaalam pagalum paatpattanru irul" is explained in the contrast of these two hearts.
