Explanation

Valluvar gives two causes for where courtesy comes from: possessing love and being born in a noble family. Love is natural tenderness in the heart. "Aandra kudippirathal" is being born and raised in a family full of good qualities and honour. The former is a quality within; the latter is the upbringing of one's setting.

Commentators caution that noble birth here must not be read as superiority by birth. Earlier, in the chapters on family and greatness, Valluvar said eminence comes from deeds, not birth. So here "kudippirappu" means a family setting where good conduct, sweet habits and respect for elders are taught down the generations. That upbringing supports love.

The story of Prahlada fits. He was born in an asura family, yet through the good teaching he heard from Narada, he grew love of God and love for all beings. His courtesy came not from birth but from the nurture of love and a good environment.

Some commentators take "ivvirandum panbudaimai" to mean courtesy is complete when both join; others, that even one brings courtesy. With both, it is excellent.

In our homes the love and habits parents show become the child's courtesy. The child learns by seeing: bowing to elders, sharing food, speaking sweetly to juniors. So the family is a school.

Respect taught as ritual without love is only acting. Only when love comes from within does courtesy become natural.

A story

Prahlada Raised in Love

The story of Prahlada comes in the seventh skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. The asura king Hiranyakashipu hated Vishnu. When his wife Kayadhu was with child, Indra carried her off and the sage Narada saved her. He gave her protection in his ashram and taught her devotion to Vishnu. The child in her womb also heard that teaching. He was Prahlada.

Though raised in Hiranyakashipu's palace, Prahlada stayed firm in love of God and love for all beings. In the gurukula the asura teachers taught political science. But Prahlada told his companions, "Showing love to all beings is the highest learning. God dwells in every heart." The boys loved him and heeded his word.

His father threatened him, had him thrown from a mountain, trampled by elephants, put in fire and given poison. In none did Prahlada give up love and patience. He did not even hate his father. He prayed to God, "Let no suffering come to my father."

At last Hiranyakashipu asked, "Is your God in this pillar too?" and kicked the pillar. Then the Lord appeared as Narasimha and destroyed him. He then blessed Prahlada and told him to ask a boon. Prahlada asked nothing for himself but prayed, "Let my father's sins be removed." In love and forgiveness his character rose beyond the birth in the asura line.

Here Narada's good counsel and Prahlada's love in his heart together made him a man of courtesy. Valluvar's love and good upbringing join in this story. It also shows that a child raised in a loving setting keeps love in any setting.
