Explanation

A file is the sharp tool that rasps even iron. Valluvar says that even if one is as sharp in intellect and skill as a file, one without human qualities is like a tree. A tree is without feeling, unaware of love and compassion. One with knowledge but without courtesy is comparable to a tree.

"Koormai" here is subtlety of intellect, ability and cleverness. These are useful. But unless joined to courtesy they become tools that wound others. The file's sharpness wears away iron; the sharpness of the discourteous wears away people. Not all who are able are good.

Duryodhana in the Mahabharata is an example. He had skill in scheming, in rule and in arms. But his heart was full of envy, pride and lack of love. He insulted Draupadi at the dice game and ignored the counsel of elders. Despite ability he perished for lack of courtesy.

Some commentators take "makkatpanbu" as humanity, others as the quality of dealing with people. "Maram" is read as the state of having life but no feeling.

In today's world there are those who with great learning and office do not know how to respect others. However high their knowledge, relationships do not last with them. If education does not grow courtesy it is not complete education.

To grow knowledge and courtesy together is the best life. Knowledge shows the way; courtesy takes everyone along that way.

A story

Skill Without Courtesy: Duryodhana

In the Mahabharata Duryodhana was not lacking in ability. In the Adi Parva he is said to be a hero equal to Bhima with the mace. He learned all weapons from Dronacharya. Later he was an able king who gathered eleven akshauhinis of troops. He had the ability to gather friends and the generosity that gave Karna the kingdom of Anga.

But his heart was full of envy. Unable to bear the prosperity the Pandavas gained at Indraprastha, he arranged, with Shakuni's help, the dice game to destroy them. He cheated Yudhishthira and won everything. In the assembly he had Draupadi dragged in and insulted her. When Vidura, Bhishma and Dhritarashtra counselled him, he did not listen.

When Krishna came as envoy to avert war and asked, "Give the Pandavas at least five villages," Duryodhana refused: "I will not give even land the size of a needle's point." He even tried to seize Krishna. His ability did not serve even himself.

In the Kurukshetra war, though he had a vast army and great leaders, he lost. In the end he fell with his thigh broken. After his friends and kin had died, he stood alone. Though he had knowledge and strength, lacking the courtesy to deal with others lovingly, all of it became a burden and destroyed him. He stands as one with the sharpness of a file but the heart of a tree.

The lesson of this tale: ability joined with courtesy is light to the world; without courtesy it is ruin. While learning we must also learn courtesy.
