Explanation

Here Valluvar gives a beautiful and painful image. A woman who has beauty and youth but never finds a life partner grows old alone, and her loveliness is spent on no one. Wealth is the same. It is a good thing, and it reaches its fullness only when it is of use to others. Standing alone and helping nobody, its goodness fades and ages.

'Atraarkku' means those in want. They are the people most deserving of giving. A man who does nothing for them wastes the highest use of his wealth. Old commentators explain the depth of the image thus: a beautiful woman who never marries can bring good to no one by her beauty, and her sorrow is her own. Wealth too turns into sorrow for its keeper.

Today, if a family's wealth serves no school, no hospital, no hungry person, it is like beauty withering behind a closed door. Wealth becomes beautiful when it is of use to someone. We should not close with our own hand the door that lets that beauty be seen. Look closer and it is clear Valluvar does not fault beauty; he grieves that it is wasted. The same grief applies to wasted wealth. The chance to help a poor person is always at hand, and he who misses it ages his wealth's youth before its very eyes. So the verse is not only a warning but an invitation: help today.

A story

The Golu Dolls

In a small town near Tirunelveli lived a wealthy woman called Seethalakshmi Ammal. Her house was a mansion. At Navaratri her golu was the finest in town: ivory Dashavatara figures, a gold-plated Goddess, and rows upon rows of wooden marapachi dolls.

But she invited no one. "The evil eye will fall on it; the dolls will lose their lustre," she would say, and kept her doors shut. For nine days the golu glowed alone. Small children peeped at her gate and went away disappointed.

Her neighbour Meenakshi was poor and owned only a handful of dolls. Yet each evening she called the women and children of the street, gave them sundal, betel and kumkum, and sang. Her house was filled with laughter for nine days.

On Vijayadashami Seethalakshmi sat alone before her golu. The dolls were lovely, but there was no one to admire them. For the first time she felt her loneliness, and a line came to her mind: beauty that grows old alone.

The next year she opened her doors and invited the whole village. From the first day the house rang with voices. Children marvelled at the dolls and the women sang. When Seethalakshmi herself handed out kumkum, her face bloomed as if she were young again.

She learned that beauty is completed when it feeds another's eyes, and that wealth too stays young only when it is of use to people.
