Explanation

At the end of the ten verses Valluvar turns to hope. A giver may seem diminished, but his fall is temporary, like the look of a cloud that has just rained. The cloud pours out all its water and seems pale and empty. But what it gave becomes green on the land and flowing water in the rivers, and returns through the sea to rise again as cloud.

The word 'siruthuni' is notable: it means no great misery, only a small setback. A 'seerudai selvar' is a man distinguished by his generosity. Although he is lessened by giving away his goods, his renown lives in the hearts of those who are grateful to him, and that is what raises him again. If the previous nine verses described the misery of the clutching nature, this one describes the comfort of the giving nature. Those who fear giving may take courage: pouring out is not loss but circulation. History remembers the givers far more than it remembers those who hoarded.

The beauty of the verse is how well it fits what we see in nature. After a dark cloud has poured out in summer, the sky looks bare. But by then the earth has cooled and seeds are beginning to sprout. The giver's emptiness is likewise a sign of green coming up in other lives. So one who is reduced by giving need not grieve, says Valluvar.

A story

Rantideva's Water

This is the story of King Rantideva from the Bhagavata Purana. He gave everything he had to those who begged. In the end, with his kingdom and wealth gone, he wandered the forest with his family, a poor man. For forty-eight days they had neither food nor water.

On the forty-ninth morning, unexpectedly, they received some payasam with ghee, a little other food and drinking water. As they were about to eat, a Brahmin arrived and asked for food. Rantideva happily gave a share of his portion. Then a labourer came and he gave to him too. Then a man arrived with dogs, and he gave to them as well.

Last of all came a man dying of thirst and asked for water. Rantideva gave him the little water that remained. "I do not ask for the eight siddhis, nor even for freedom from rebirth. My wish is to take upon myself the suffering of all beings and free them from distress," he said.

Then the three great gods appeared. Those who had come were their own maya, sent only to test Rantideva, says the Purana. Astonished at his utter non-attachment, they granted him boons. His poverty was a brief 'siruthuni' caused by giving; his fame has outlasted the ages.

Rantideva's life proves that one who becomes lessened by giving is not lessened in the end. Like the cloud that has rained, he rose again.

To reflect on

Recall a time when giving seemed to leave you poorer; how did it come back to you in the end?
