Karumaththaal Naanudhal Naanun Thirunudhal / Nallavar Naanup Pira

The blush of the worthy is for action that become them not: it is therefore quite different to the blush of the fair.V. V. S. Aiyar · 1916

Meaning

True shame is the inward blush at a wrong deed. The natural bashfulness of fair-browed women is a different thing.

Explanation

In this verse Valluvar separates two kinds of shame. One is the wincing in the heart when a person does or thinks of doing a wrong deed. That is the voice of conscience, and this is the naan praised in the chapter. The other is the natural modesty that shows on a young woman's face, a blend of beauty and culture. He does not belittle it, but sets it apart from the subject of the chapter.

Why does the distinction matter? Not everything that makes one shy is naanudaimai. Some people are shy of speaking the truth or of asking for help; that is only a habit of timidity. But feeling revulsion at telling a lie, at taking another's property or at slandering someone is shame turned towards dharma. The first is a trait of manner; the second is a purity of conduct. Some commentators take 'nallavar' to mean women and others take it simply as the good, but the distinction holds either way.

The phrase 'karumaththaal naanudhal' also tells us that the measure of shame is the deed, not the person's looks or rank. If the deed is good, there is no need to hang one's head; if the deed is wrong, even the highest must blush. This ethic cuts across all differences of rich and poor, king and subject. For us the lesson is simple: do not ignore the small wince your heart gives when you do wrong. It is the first alarm that turns you back from the fault. If you brush the voice aside often enough, it eventually falls silent.

A story

The Gurukulam Mango

There was a gurukulam near Kanchipuram where fifteen students lived and studied. In the ashram garden stood a large mango tree. Its fruit was kept for offering to the Lord and for guests, and the guru's command was that the students were not to pluck it.

One noon a student named Vasu was alone in the garden. Hunger gnawed at him. A ripe mango hung from a branch. He looked around; no one was there. He reached out and plucked the fruit. As he ate, his heart suddenly winced. Though no one had seen him, the sense of having broken a command rose to his throat.

He did not finish the fruit. He took the remaining half to the guru and bowed his head. "Master, I broke your command. No one saw me, but my heart saw. Forgive me." The guru looked at him closely.

"It is rare for one to do wrong when no one sees, and then come and confess," said the guru. "The loss of the fruit is nothing. What matters is that your heart winced at itself. As long as you keep that wince, all you learn will be safe in you." Then he set Vasu a penance: to water the trees in the garden the whole next day.

Vasu accepted it with a sorrowful face but a clean heart. That evening the guru told all the students of the incident, without naming anyone: "Shame is not fear of others; it is fear of one's own heart."

From that day no student there touched anything without leave. They learned that honesty when no one watches is the first lesson of gurukula education.
