Explanation

Valluvar compares shame to a fence. A fence around a field guards the crop from cattle. In the same way shame around a person's life is a guard that keeps improper deeds from entering. A place with no such fence will not last, however rich it is. Before accepting something, the noble ask, 'How did I come by this?' and if the way is shameful they refuse it, though it be the entire world.

The word 'viyanjaalam', the wide world, is the key. To give up shame for a small gain is easy; but to refuse to give it up even when the whole world is offered marks the truly great. The firmness of character shows when the temptation is large. Commentators read the particle 'mannum' as carrying a note of regret, and also praise: such people are rare, but they exist.

The thought is a familiar one in Hindu tradition: a kingdom won at the price of dharma does not endure is the centre of many Puranas. Whether post, wealth or fame, the way of getting it must also be honourable. Success is measured not by the goal alone but by the road. In modern life, when a promotion, a contract or an exam result can be won by a wrong route, the fence of shame must stop us. A success gained by breaking that fence lowers us within. True greatness is the resolve to keep the same fence whether the opportunity is small or large.

A story

Karna's Refusal

This scene is from the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. Before the war broke out, Krishna went as envoy to try for peace. Duryodhana would not agree. On his way back Krishna met Karna alone and told him a great secret: "Karna, you are not the son of a charioteer. You are Kunti's eldest son, the elder brother of the Pandavas."

Krishna went on: "Come over to the Pandavas. Yudhishthira is your younger brother; the kingdom will be yours. The Pandavas will stand at your feet. The whole earth will be yours." No one before had ever been offered so much.

Karna was silent for a while. Then he said: "Krishna, I know that all you say is true. But the one who accepted me through all my days was Duryodhana. When everyone mocked me as a charioteer's son, he crowned me king of Anga. If I leave him now, when war is near, it would be an act of ingratitude, and I would be ashamed of it."

"Even if the whole world were mine, I do not want it if it is built on betraying my friend," said Karna. Krishna fell silent at his firmness. Though Karna knew the outcome of his chosen alliance, he refused to break the fence of gratitude.

Karna's choice is debatable because he stands on the wrong side. But as an example of the strength of the 'fence of shame', it is clear. The Mahabharata honours a man who, with the whole world on offer, would not give up his sense of shame. In later ages his generosity and firmness are still praised.
