Explanation

This verse shows the peak of shame. Earlier verses spoke of its beauty and use; here its price is named. Life is each person's greatest possession. One who values shame above even life is a 'naanaalbavar'. To rule by shame is to accept it as the master of one's life. This should not be taken as praise of suicide. Commentators link it to the traditional saying that honour is greater than life: better not to live a life without shame than to survive by improper means. More often it shows itself not as giving up life but as the resolve to bear hardship: to endure hunger, blame and loss.

The quality appears in many stories of our tradition. In ordinary life it shows in refusing to bow to a lie, in not accepting a bribe, in accepting the loss of a job. Not everyone meets a crisis in which life itself is at stake, but the one who keeps shame in small trials is the one who will stand in the great trial.

So the verse tells us to be clear in advance about what we shall never give up 'for the sake of life'. Then in a crisis we shall not waver. Valluvar underlines the same idea in his chapter on honour (maanam), where he gives the image of the yak that dies if its hair is lost. This verse is the continuation of that tradition, shown here as the peak of shame. We need not reach that extreme in daily life, but we should draw that boundary line in our mind.

A story

Sita in the Ashoka Grove

This scene is from the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana held Sita captive in the Ashoka grove of Lanka. Hanuman came there as Rama's messenger and found her. He showed Rama's ring and gave her hope.

Hanuman said: "Mother, climb on my back. I shall carry you across the sea to Rama in a moment." It was a great opportunity. For ten months she had suffered in captivity; the rakshasis threatened her. She could escape from this prison at once.

But Sita refused. "Hanuman, I know your strength. But I am Rama's wife. It is not proper for me to be lifted and carried away by another than my husband. When Ravana took me, it was against my will. Now to be touched by another with my own consent would shame me. It is more fitting for my husband, my family and myself that he should come and conquer Ravana with his bow and take me back."

Sita was prepared to bear the danger to her life and the cruelty of the prison. She was not prepared to give up her sense of shame. She told Hanuman of her pure resolve. Hanuman bowed to her stand, took her crest-jewel as a token and returned.

The Ramayana honours highly this firmness of not giving up shame for the sake of safety. Sita's choice is a living example of Valluvar's word 'naanaalbavar'.
