Wealth without Benefaction · Nandriyilselvam

This chapter shows that wealth which is neither enjoyed nor shared is a wasted life, however large the hoard. Valluvar warns that riches without giving and affection are like a poisonous tree fruiting in the middle of a village.

Introduction

Standing at the head of the Kudiyiyal in the Book of Wealth, this chapter is a stern warning about what wealth is for. The book has already spoken of earning and guarding riches through the king, the minister and the fortress. Now it asks the harder question: what is the use of what has been earned? Our tradition names four aims of life, aram, porul, inbam and veedu (dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation), and wealth has its place among them only as a tool in the service of dharma and joy. When the tool becomes the goal, Valluvar steps in.

The first verse begins bluntly. The man who owns a vast treasure and does not eat of it has died while still breathing. The second verse calls the one who thinks 'wealth is everything' and gives nothing a creature of delusion. Verses three and four turn to renown: the hoarder is a burden on the earth, and when he dies he leaves nothing that people will remember. Verses five and six say that ten million in the vault mean nothing to one who neither gives nor enjoys, and that such a man is a disease in his own fortune.

Verses seven and eight offer two memorable images. The riches of the man who helps nobody are like a beautiful woman who grows old alone; they are like a poison tree that fruits in the middle of the village, tempting no one and endangering all. Verse nine says that wealth gathered without affection, without regard for dharma, and by starving oneself is carried off by strangers. The last verse swings towards hope: the temporary poverty of a noble giver is like a rain cloud that has emptied itself, and it will fill again.

Notice that Valluvar does not condemn wealth. Elsewhere he praises honest earning. What he condemns here is ivaral, the clutching greed that sets in after earning, which neither lets a person eat nor lets him give. Classical commentators such as Parimelazhagar read the chapter as a portrait of those who gain riches yet leave the work of dharma undone.

The lesson is current. When the numbers in an account grow, we forget to ask whether they are serving anyone. Sharing a meal and feeding the hungry give wealth a dignity that piling it up never can.

Chapter story

Kubera's Feast

From the Puranic tradition, in the Shaiva stories of Ganesha: this tale is told in several versions. Kubera, lord of wealth, lived in his city of Alakapuri, and his treasuries overflowed. But a small pride had made its home in him: the thought that no one in all the worlds possessed as much as he. To show it off, he went to Kailasa and invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma to dine at his palace.

Shiva smiled. "We are simple people. But I shall send you our son Ganesha." Kubera was secretly pleased. What could a boy eat? Let him see my splendour, he thought, and had a thousand dishes laid out.

Ganesha sat down. Rice, lentils, sweets, fruits: everything served disappeared in moments. "More," he said. The kitchens emptied, then the storehouses. Kubera began to sweat. When the food was gone, Ganesha started looking at the pillars and vessels of the palace. Terrified, Kubera ran to Kailasa, fell at Shiva's feet and wept: "My pride is broken. Save me."

The attendants stood stunned as dish after dish went empty. The grain stores of Alakapuri, filled over many years with rice, ghee, honey and fruit, were emptied one by one. A thought pierced Kubera's heart: with all this hoard, I cannot satisfy even one small boy's hunger. Until that day he had counted his riches again and again, but he had never once asked whether they had done anyone any good. The thought was new, and it was painful, and it was the beginning of wisdom.

Goddess Uma took a handful of roasted flattened rice. "Give him this with love," said Shiva. Kubera returned, hands trembling, and humbly offered the little handful to Ganesha. The child ate it and smiled. "Enough. I am full."

That day Kubera learned something. What a thousand dishes could not fill, a handful offered with love and humility filled in a moment. The worth of wealth lies not in its size but in the heart that gives. Riches displayed for pride had become a burden to him; a simple gift offered humbly set him free.

Elders retell that Shiva said at that moment: "Wealth is with you not to be guarded but to be shared." The Purana closes by saying that Kubera became truly wealthy only in the instant his pride broke.

Tradition adds that Kubera afterwards opened his treasury to devotees and the poor, understanding that wealth was meant to move in the world and not to sleep in a vault. What Valluvar calls 'nandri illa selvam', wealth with no gratitude or benefaction, however vast, cannot satisfy hunger where there is no love. This story shows it plainly.
