Explanation

The beloved looks at the lover secretly. When he looks she turns away, and when he does not look she gazes at him intently. The lover notices this. The word 'kankalavu' denotes a hidden look, one done without the knowledge of others. That small glance may seem simple, yet all her love is contained in it.

'Sempaakam' means exactly half. He says that the small glance is not merely half of love but more than half. This is because in a stolen glance desire, fear and modesty all combine. The yearning that cannot refrain from looking and the fear that others might notice add weight to that glance.

In love, speech comes afterward, and the glance is the first step. When the glance is made in hiding, its truth shows clearly, and that is the subtlety Valluvar shows here. An open look may be a matter of duty, while a concealed look arises only from affection. This thought gives the lover both confidence and joy. The verse also reveals the lover's joy. The beloved has not said that she loves him, yet her hidden glance says it. It means that a whole truth shown in concealment is worth more than half a truth openly declared. Seeing this, the lover's heart fills; he forgets his distress and takes hope.

A story

The Girl Drawing Kolam and the Milkman

It is the beauty of our towns that on dawns of the month of Margazhi the streets are adorned with kolam designs. In a small town a young woman named Selvi would rise early every day and draw a large dotted kolam at her doorstep. The young man who brought milk along that same street each day was Muthu.

One day when Muthu came with his milk pot Selvi was bending to draw her kolam. When she sensed him looking, she did not raise her head. But when he turned at the bend of the street, she lifted her head gently and gazed for a moment toward the direction in which he went. When Muthu looked back she had already bent over her kolam again.

This game went on for many days. He sensed through the corner of his eye that tiny moment when she looked at him, and he stored it in his heart as a great message. One day she had drawn a small lotus in the middle of the kolam she was making. He felt it was her silent reply.

As Valluvar says, that stolen glance is more than half of love. Words had not yet been spoken, but each had gained a place in the other's heart. Later, with the elders' consent, they were married. This is a story from our village culture, and the characters are invented. Though the looks were furtive, they carried respect and modesty, so the love stood without any loss of dignity.
