Wanton Women · Varaivinmakalir

This chapter warns against trusting sweet words and embraces that are offered for money and not out of love, and losing one's wealth and peace in them. Valluvar says that people of discernment and firm minds refuse such delusion and seek true love and compassion instead.

Introduction

This is the third chapter of the Natpiyal in the book of Wealth. In the previous chapter Valluvar spoke about one kind of delusion that robs a man of his judgement. Here he takes up another: infatuation with a relationship that is entered into for money, without love. 'Varaivin makalir' are women who do not bind themselves to one partner and who give their company in return for wealth. This points to a practice of the ancient society, and the modern reader does well to take the broader meaning, that is, false affection offered for a price.

We must read this chapter with humanity. What Valluvar criticises is the turning of intimacy into trade, and the delusion of men who lose their wits in it. Modern society knows well that many women were pushed into that life by circumstances. Classical commentators such as Parimelazhagar explain the chapter in terms of women who give company for payment. So this is not a text that scorns one sex; it is advice to tell true love from mere appetite.

It also helps to see why Valluvar puts this chapter here. It is not in the section on virtue, but in the Natpiyal of the book of Wealth. The emphasis is therefore not only a moral sermon but practical wisdom: a note on what a person must avoid if he wishes to keep the wealth, fame and standing he has earned. It is hard to gather wealth, and harder to keep it, and the one who cannot keep it loses even what he earned. That is why the next two chapters speak of drink and dice as well.

The ten verses explain this step by step. The first three ask us to look at the purpose behind sweet words, and say sharply that a false embrace is like embracing a corpse. Verses four to six say that the wise and those who guard their own good will not fall into such delusion. Verses seven, eight and nine say that it is people without a steady heart who sink in it, and compare it to a mire. The tenth closes by naming double-minded women, drink and dice as the companions of those whom fortune has left.

It applies to present life as well. In every relationship we need the ability to tell real concern from sweet words that are being sold. In advertising language, flattery, false friendships and online relationships, such delusions surround us today in many forms. The warning in this chapter protects us not only from the loss of wealth but also from the loss of peace of mind.

Chapter story

The Redemption of Arunagirinathar

This is the story of Arunagirinathar as told in the Tamil tradition.

In Tiruvannamalai lived a young man named Arunagiri. Born in a good family, he had wealth and learning. In the unrestrained desire of youth he wasted his wealth and sank into wrong company and pleasures. He did not heed even the loving advice of his sister Adi. Gradually his home, his wealth and his health all declined.

The tradition says his father was a fine merchant and that, brought up in plenty, he never lacked anything. In the festival days of the Annamalaiyar temple, when the whole town shone with lamps, his house was a house of splendour. Friends, flatterers and those who spun nets with sweet words surrounded him, and he thought them true friends. Only his sister Adi, anxious for him, warned him many times, "Brother, a friendship that comes looking at the giver's hand will not last." To one under a spell the words tasted bitter.

When his money was gone, the relationships he had sought left him. Disease took hold of him too. Tradition says that those who had surrounded him with sweet words would not even let him stand at their door once his wealth was spent. With body and heart broken, he came to hate his own life.

One day he climbed to the top of the lofty tower of the Tiruvannamalai temple and tried to throw himself down to end his life. At that moment a voice sounded, "Arunagiri, do not!" A hand caught him. When he opened his eyes, Lord Kandan, the red-spear Murugan, stood before him.

His body trembled. He was ashamed that he had tried to end his life. "You were not born for this life to be wasted. Your tongue is to sing my glory," said Murugan kindly.

Murugan graciously blessed him. Tradition says that he cured his disease, wrote on his tongue with his spear, and commanded him to begin singing with the words "Muththai tharu paththith thirunagai". From that day Arunagirinathar composed countless Thiruppugazh songs in praise of Murugan, full of rhythm and sweetness.

He did not conceal his old life. In his own songs he is said to have blamed himself, telling of his fall through delusion and his rescue by grace. Because his life shows both the mistakes and the way back, he has become an example of hope to many.

The friendships and sweetness that had come only for money brought him sorrow. But the Lord's grace and a mind willing to mend itself raised him up. The tale shows that the delusion of false pleasures leads to ruin, and that one who seeks true grace can bloom again.
